Für die Autorinnen und Autoren entstehen keine Publikationskosten. Die Open Access-Transformation erfolgt auf der Basis von Subscribe-to-Open , eines alternativen Modells, das durch die Weiterführung bestehender Abonnements die vollständige Open Access-Transformation von Zeitschriften ermöglicht. Voraussetzung dafür ist, dass die Abonnements im bisherigen Umfang fortgeführt werden. Die Herausgeberinnen und Herausgeber sowie der Verlag De Gruyter danken daher allen Abonnentinnen und Abonnenten für die Unterstützung, die die Umstellung auf den Open Access möglich gemacht hat. Der BIBLIOTHEKSDIENST erscheint seit 1967 und wurde im Jahre 2002 von der Zentral- und Landesbibliothek Berlin (ZLB) übernommen. Ab 2013 teilte sich die ZLB die Herausgebertätigkeit mit dem Landesbibliothekszentrum Rheinland-Pfalz (LBZ), das von 2014 bis 2018 als alleiniger Herausgeber verantwortlich war. Seit 2019 ist die FernUniversität in Hagen der Herausgeber der Zeitschrift. Der BIBLIOTHEKSDIENST erscheint jährlich in jeweils 10 Heften (monatlich, davon 2 Doppelhefte) und beleuchtet traditionelle wie auch technisch-innovative Themenbereiche, vermittelt Informationen aus den Bibliotheken sowie aus Institutionen, Verbänden und Vereinen des Bibliothekswesens und seiner Nachbarbereiche. Seine Stärke liegt in der praxis-orientierten thematischen Ausrichtung. Er bietet zudem verschiedene Rubriken mit Notizen und Mitteilungen, Fachbeiträgen, Terminen (Kursangeboten) und Anzeigen. Der Beirat setzt sich aus Vertreterinnen und Vertretern aus wissenschaftlichen und öffentlichen Bibliotheken sowie aus Hochschule und Lehre zusammen. Bis einschließlich 2021 wurden die Einzelausgaben zwölf Monate nach ihrem Erscheinen Free Access gestellt. Autoren konnten nach einer Frist von 6 Monaten ihre Artikel auf eigenen Websites und Repositorien veröffentlichen.
