Softwareentwicklung ist ein elementarer, unverzichtbarer Bestandteil der Forschungstätigkeit. Wissenschaftliche Software unterstützt zunehmend die Gewinnung, Verarbeitung und Auswertung von empirischen Daten, aber auch die Modellierung und Simulation von komplexen Prozessen. Damit hat Software einen maßgeblichen Einfluss auf die Qualität der erzielten Forschungsergebnisse. Das Britische Software Sustainability Institut (SSI) hat dafür den Slogan “Better Software - Better Research” geprägt.
Die Open Researcher and Contributor ID, kurz ORCID, ist eine Kennung für Forscherinnen und Forscher, die ihnen u. a. die Pflege ihrer Publikationsliste erleichtert. Jede Person, die im wissenschaftlichen Arbeitsprozess einen Beitrag leistet, kann sich über ihre ORCID mit ihren Publikationen, Forschungsdaten und anderen Produkten des Forschungsprozesses (zum Beispiel Software) eindeutig vernetzen. Damit werden diese Objekte sichtbar und technisch verlässlich mit ihren Erschafferinnen und Erschaffern verbunden.

Representatives from a variety of backgrounds, including policy makers, legal experts, computer scientists, librarians and archivists, appealed to UNESCO’s Member States, international organizations, business leaders and civil society, to preserve, collect and share the existing software commons as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This appeal was made at an expert meeting co-organized by UNESCO and Inria on 6 and 7 November. The meeting was an important milestone in the roadmap of the vigorous partnership started in 2017 between the UNESCO and Inria on this matter.
