cis-Ru(bpy)2Cl2 (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) reacted with H4PQQ (I) to give Ru(bpy)2(H2PQQ) (II). II was reversibly electrochem. reduced to the semiquinone complex and subsequently to the catechol complex. The results along with ESR and absorption spectral data are compared with those for [Ru(bpy)2L]2+ (L = 4,7-phenonthroline-5,6-dione, 9,10-phenanthrenequinone) whose 1st redn. step is irreversible. At pH 8.5 H2PQQ2- in II is deprotonated to PQQ4-. [on SciFinder(R)]
