Abstract
The paper presents an innovative approach towards the teaching of structural engineering at the Moscow Architecture School (MARCH). The curriculum presented herewith is part of the module “Technology” taught within the framework of MARCH’s bachelor degree. It follows the tradition established at the University of Stuttgart, but also draws on principles and programs defined together with the London Metropolitan University (LMU) CASS School of Art, Architecture and Design.
The authors explore how differences in understanding architecture (for example, from a more technical perspective in Germany or from a more humanitarian and artistic perspective in Russia) are reflected in the corresponding architectural school systems (particularly with regard to the technical curricula). The paper analyzes whether and how these differences can be overcome and integrated into a consolidated, more universal teaching system.
The authors propose a method that uses advantageous characteristics of two different European educational systems, German and British, and show examples and results of the implementation of this method within the Russian educational environment.
