Published in two instalments, this article shows that research, which is being done in Germany at the Institute of Machine Components, University of Stuttgart, is attempting to remedy this situation. The first part, which appears here, highlights the lack of design rules and looks at the structure of sealing gaps, the flow of grease in these gaps and the influence gap direction has on the sealing effect.
