Zusammenfassung
Air-barrier seals are compact non contacting seals offering the possibility to seal fast running machine tool spindies which might permanently change their position in space. Hitherto the efficiency of such seals depends on the scattered know-how of the designers. In the paper the basic functions of air-barrier seals are described. In an air- barrier seal air is injected into narrow c1earances and creates a barrier pressure Pa. Cooling liquid which at high velocity splashes onto the entrance of the outer c1earance builds up pressure Pfl at this point. The air-barrier prevents liquid to leak into the bearing area as long as Pa is higher than Pfl. For various configurations of the seal the barrier pressure Pa is calculated and compared to experimental results. The influence of eccentrical or inclined position of the spindie is demonstrated. In view of the economy of sealing the conditions of minimum air consumption are discussed. Finally, based on experience and systematic testing, the paper presents design directives for air-barrier systems designated to seal asplashing liquid.
