In a current research project, the Institute for Control Engineering ofMachine Tools and Manufacturing Units develops a concept for a failuretolerant numerical control. The approach is based on triple modular redundancywhich is currently used for safety PLCs only. The challenge to synchronize andexchange data between three or more numerical controls places additionalrequirements on industrial communication systems. This article describes theredundant approach for the failure tolerant numerical control and derives theadditional requirements for comunication systems from it.
