Up to now, machine tools in micro productionhardly feature modularity and hence offer only few opportunitiesto reconfigure or individualize a manufacturing process. This article gives a summary of concepts, how modularityin small micro machine tools can be designed andimplemented. A size-adaptable machine frame is the basisfor various possible process layouts. Adapters, a feed modulewith replaceable drive and kinematics, equipped withappropriate interfaces as well as a supply concept are introducedto allow further configuration. The combination ofthose concepts characterizes a small modular machine toolsystem. Technical solutions and fully functional prototypeswill be shown and discussed in the following paper.
