Re(bdz)(CO)3X (X = Cl or Br; bdz = 3,3'-bipyridazine, 2,2'-bipyrazine, 2,2'-and 4,4'-bipyrimidine) were prepd. from Re(CO)5X by thermal substitution. All the complexes show long-wavelength emission at room temp. in CHCl3 soln. after irradn. into the metal-to-ligand charge transfer band. Spectroscopic data and electrochem. redn. potentials confirm the superior polarizing ability of neutral Re(CO)3X fragments for a-diimine p system, and the electrochem. and photophys. data can be correlated with the established properties of the free ligands, of their anion radicals, and of other d6 metal (W0, RuII) complexes.
