Compatibility of Oil Additives and Elastomeric Radial Lip Seals

, , and . Proceedings of the 2. OilDoc Conference and Exhibition, (2013)

Abstract

The project has been initiated to get a basic understanding about the influence of additives onto elastomeric lip seal systems. The chosen radial lip seals are made from NBR and FPM. The chosen fluids are made from the base oils Polyglycole and Polyalphaolefin. In the first step of the project always one single additive is solved in the base oils (altogether 19 fluids). In the second step of the project 2 up to 6 additives are solved in the base oils (altogether 8 fluids). Friction torque tests, pumping rate tests, 96 hour functional tests and 504 hour endurance runs have been done in both steps of the project. Every kind of these dynamic tests allows evaluating a special aspect of the operating conditions of the sealing system. The influences of the base oil, of the single additives and of the elastomeric material onto the operating conditions are carried out. In static elastomer compatibility tests the changes of the mechanical properties of dumbbell samples S2 during the exposure in the fluids was found. It has been analysed if there is a correlation between these changes and the results of the dynamic tests. There is no correlation between these changes and the results of the dynamic tests.
