The poorly sol. (TCNB) or insol. compds. (TCNE, TCNQ) exhibit nitrile IR stretching frequencies compatible with only a moderate metal-to-TCNX electron transfer. This observation stands in contrast to results obtained for previously reported tetranuclear species from the reaction of TCNX ligands with complex fragments contg. d6-configurated metal centers (MnI, RuII, OsII). The TCNB complex was characterized in soln. by cyclic voltammetry, 1H NMR, IR and UV-visible spectroelectrochem. and by EPR of the 1-electron reduced form. [on SciFinder(R)]
