Tribological behaviour of PTFE seal materials in sealing contact with steel and ceramic coatings
H. Haiser, and W. Haas. Proceedings of the 16th International Conference on Fluid Sealing, page 19–27. Bury St. Edmunds, Professional Engineering Publications, (2000)185.
Abstract
The wear of PTFE lip seal represents one cause of failure in practice. Accordingly adequate compounds with a higher wear resistance are required. This paper deals with fundamental tribological properties and effects of filled PTFE materials in sealing contact with steel surfaces and ceramic coatings, mainly on the basis of experimental work done in the authors' laboratory. Specific friction and wear mechanisms of PTFE materials were discussed. The results presented in this paper have been carried out on a new lubricated ring-on-disk test concept at the Institut für Maschinenelemente of the University of Stuttgart. The experiments demonstrate once more that a reliable sealing system needs a careful material seleetion and an adequate surface finish.
