Abstract

Transparency in high-rise buildings is achieved through the facades, through fine constructions near the facades, and through open floor space in the central areas of the building. In order to realise such transparency, it is on the one hand necessary to find alternatives to the classical tube system for the primary construction. On the other hand it is essential to create secondary structures that are as delicate as possible. The new headquarter of the Deutsche Post AG in Bonn was finished at the end of 2002 (fi g. 1). The design of the building was created by Helmut Jahn in close cooperation with Werner Sobek. The 162,5 m high building has an interesting primary structure, which allows a transparent, open room between the two circle-shaped building parts. The double skin façade together with the decentralized climatemanagement supply system is innovative and leads to reduced running costs. The steel-glass constructions of the facades, the glass floors, the Top terrace and the Annex building create a transparent and amazing building envelope.
