Abstract
The following contribution describes recent and current research efforts into adaptive structures. Having evolved from conceptual ideas, the field has undergone significant progress over the last fifteen years. Comprehensive investigations into a variety of structural systems have been carried out, both in the development of the theory as well as the implementation of model-scale and full-scale prototypes, showing the great potential of adaptive structures with respect to the active control of displacements, stress distributions and vibrations.
