Abstract

The coolant supply has the largest impact on the energy consumption in metalcutting manufacturing. Energyoptimization measures, like retrofitting energy-efficient components orreducing the coolant demand, haveoften multiple energy reduction effects due to energy dependencies throughoutthe production. At present, optimizations are often not realized and falsely claimed to be notcost effective, as only the energyreduction of the direct concerned components are compared to the expenses. Themajor barriers forpredicting the overall energy savings are the numerous influencing variableson the energy consumption of allrelated components and their complex energy dependencies. This paper describes a model-based method for a practical and efficientestimation of the total energy savingsof energy optimizations for the use in the economic assessment. A case studyshows that the total energysaving potential is up to 90% higher when taking all energy reduction effectsinto account.
