Abstract

With industry being responsible for one third of the energyconsumption in Europe, equal emphasis has to be put on efficiency measuresin this area as for the buildings and transport sectors. In previouspublications, we have shown that energy consumption of production machinescan be described accurately using a lean, scalable modelling technique.Consequentially, we have applied this model to energy consumption analysisand optimisation of machine tools. Nevertheless, the savings potentialcreated at the individual machine level has to be met by an equallyefficient design and operation of the factory environment. By linkingmicro and macro level incentives are created to ensure full exploitationof savings potential and environmental performance. Therefore, we extendour analysis and optimization in this presentation to the planning andcontrol of production systems. We overcome the limitation of existingpublications to rough optimization by applying a model which covers themain interdependencies between energy consumption, operational objectivesand resources. Following this, we introduce analysis and optimizationapplications to process and production planning and production control. The optimization results are discussed in terms of energy use in relationto value added as an indicator for the eco efficiency of production.
