Abstract
The widespread use of adaptive façades (AF) is currently still hindered by numerous challenges. The aim of
this article is to identify the challenges associated with AF by means of a systematic literature review and an
interview with experts. The literature review was based on four electronic databases, from which 57 relevant
papers were identified. The expert interview, involving twelve experts from practical research and industry,
supplemented the results. The challenges identified have been summarized in nine subordinate groups and
further assigned to the respective phases of the lifecycle of AF in which they occur. Some of the challenges
appear only in selected phases, and others throughout the entire lifecycle, although most of them could be
assigned to the design phase. The article concludes with the derivation of a concrete need for methodological
and procedural support in the planning of adaptive façades and thus forms the basis for further research to
optimize existing planning approaches.
