Abstract
The reaction of Me3CLi with GaCl3 affords tri(tert-butyl)gallium in a good yield as well as a small quantity of elemental gallium by a redox reaction. By systematically changing the reaction conditions to stop the partial redn. of trivalent gallium at an intermediate oxidn. state, a green soln. from which black-green crystals of Ga9(CMe3)9 (1) were isolated in 4\% yield after sepn. of the alkylgallium. The crystal structure and cyclic voltammetric investigation of 1 is reported and the results were corroborated with quantum chem. calcns. on SciFinder(R)
