One of the most important tools in the recruitment process for enterprises is to advertise jobs in online job portals. An adequate description of the position that lists the required duties is therefore necessary to obtain the optimal candidate to fill the position. It is interesting that the linguistic possibilities of the German language are often not used to portray the ideal candidate. A gender-balanced representation is often not the case.
In this study, we analyze whether the linguistic structure of jobs advertised in the online job portal Stepstone matches their communicative function to reach all possible applicants. We explain linguistic strategies to refer to people and give an overview of existing job titles in different industries. The in-depth analysis of the category leaders with job descriptions formulated with a masculine noun and visualized with the image of a human is based on linguistic, visual and contextual indicators. It is shown that there are jobs that have not been announced with gender fair procedures.
