Abstract

Anodic electrolysis of Cu in MeCN in the presence of Hmtpb leads to formation of yellow Cu4(mtpb)4 (Hmtpb = 1-methyl-2-(2-thiophenyl)-1H-benzimidazole) which was crystd. as a CH2Cl2 solvate with 2 crystallog. independent cluster mols. in the unit cell. The Cu(I) atoms exhibit slightly pyramidal S2N coordination with bridging thiolate S atoms. The 2 clusters contain the 4 Cu atoms arranged in a more (Cu(1)-Cu(4)) or less (Cu(5)-Cu(8)) distorted bisphenoidal arrangement. Reaction of mtpb- with Cu(ClO4)2 under anoxic conditions also produces Cu4(mtpb)4. However, the admittance of O2 in the reaction of mtpb- with Cu(II) acetate in MeOH causes oxidn. of the S atoms; a square-pyramidal configurated Cu(II) complex Cu(CH3CO2-k2O)(L1-kN)(L2-kN,O) was isolated and crystallog. characterized in which L1 is the neutral sulfinic Me ester and L2- is the sulfonate derived from mtpb-. on SciFinder(R)
