Abstract

Reacting the bidentate ligand 2-(methylselenomethyl)-1H-benzimidazole (msb) with AgBF4 in CH3CN did not produce the expected Ag(msb)2+ ion with two five-membered chelate rings but the dimeric Ag2(msb)22+, isolated and crystd. from acetonitrile/methanol as Ag(msb)(CH3CN)2(BF4)2 with six-membered chelate rings Ag-Ag-Se-C-C-N involving a Ag-Ag bond of 3.156(1) \AA distance. DFT calcns. reproduce the obsd. mol. structure of the dication. on SciFinder(R)
