Abstract

At high temperatures and in chemically aggressive environments shaft seals with a PTFE lip are increasingly used as alternatives toelastomer lip seals. PTFE lip seals do not need a supplementary spring because the elastoplastic expansion of the lip alone generates sufficient contact pressure. The intensity of the sealing contact is governed by the lip's thickness rather than the interference between lip and shaft. With the lip running dry, friction is approximately proportional to radial contact force. Oil lubricated PTFE shafts normally run on an uninterrupted oil film. Nevertheless their friction is often higher than when the same seals are running dry. The friction coefficient of oil lubricated PTFE lip seals was found to range between 0.2 and 0.4. Interestingly, high friction coefficient values are therefore not necessarily attributable to dry running or boundary lubrication.
