Wechselbeziehungen im Dichtsystem von Radial-Wellendichtring: Dissertation

. Institutsbericht (2006)285.

Abstract

Across the decades radial shaft seals have been developed into reliable sealing elements. At the same time radial shaft seals have been the primary focus of research and development. However existing tests indicate that all three sealing system components, the radial shaft seal, the shaft surface and the fluid are involved in transporting fluid in a sealing system. In this regard a model is being presented that distinguishes between an active and passive transport effect. The direct transport effect of the shaft surface and the radial shaft seal are summarized under active transport effect. The active transport effect is produced both on the shaft and on the seal edge of the radial shaft seal by directive structures which are able to produce a directed flow of fluid by themselves. The passive transport effect consists of the indirect transport effect of the shaft surface and the indirect transport effect of the system. Behind the definition of the indirect transport effect of the shaft surface is the realization that shaft surface roughness strongly affects the formation of structures on the seal edge with the ability to transport, even if it does not produce any directed flow of fluid itself. All external parameters affecting the level of transport in the system are summarized under indirect transport effect of the system. A surface parameter which can describe a shaft surface in respect of its suitability as a shaft surface must be able to take into account both the active and the passive component of the transport effect of the shaft surface. A simple model based on manually positioned structures is being presented for the active component. Whilst a suitable surface parameter, like, for example the SRWDR parameter proposed in this work, is still unavailable a close look must be taken at alternative machining processes for twist-free grinding with regard to the structure produced on the shaft. Manufacturing process parameters are an important criterion for ensuring surface quality in cases where twist-free grinding has been successfully replaced by another manufacturing process.
