The main purpose of this work is to study the directional coupler with left handed transmission lines, investigating the symmetry of the cells, their number and dimensions, presenting the advantages and disadvantages of using a type or another. Moreover, a comparison between the directional coupler built with micro-strip technology by using the metamaterials theory and the classical one designed with lumped elements will be done. The analysis was made for the frequency of 4.5GHz due to its applications in microwave and satellite communications, showing that it is possible to obtain a coupling attenuation of 0dB in a wide bandwidth, while the dimensions of the directional coupler are considerably reduced.
