Wear behaviour of PTFE lip seals with different sealing edge designs, experiments and simulation

, and . Sealing Technology, Elsevier Ltd., (2007)

Abstract

The results of the wear simulation show that this tool is able to predict the wear of PTFE lip seals. The change of geometry, which is caused by the wear, can be computed with the simulation tool that has been developed. Since the current simulation only calculates wear with an average wear factor, the outline calculated can ooly be an average of the worn geometry without consideriog the spread of the wear tests. Investigations of PTFE lip seals have shown that they exhibit a very wide spread in lifetime runs under identical operating conditions. Work by Kralo et al. /5/ has shown that the seals examined had a lifetime between 1700 and 11 800 hours. Because of the large scatter of the test results, no further statement can be made about reaching a certain lifetime; this will require further investigation. Therefore not only the average values of the wear tests should be induded. For a more meaningful simulation result, the spread of the rest results on the tribological test rig must be considered in addition to the average values.
