Abstract

One-electron oxidn. and redn. of the electron-rich (Me3Si)3CC$\equiv$CC(SiMe3)3 unexpectedly produce the persistent radical cation and radical anion, resp., of (Me3Si)2C:C:C:C(SiMe3)2. The radical anion can also be generated from Me3SiC$\equiv$CCSiMe3 and K via disproportionation. Photoelectron and ESR spectra are detd. The stability of both the radical anion and the radical cation is rationalized by the unique combination of the 2-fold butatriene p-system with 4 R3Si substituents, which can act either as electron donors or acceptors. on SciFinder(R)
