Abstract

The archetype of the nerd – white, male, able, single, bespectacled, reclusive – is slowly changing. As learning in makerspaces can be conceptualized as communities of practice 3, being able to participate and belonging to the group is key for learning success. Unfortunately, perceived obstacles, prejudice and a lack of imagination still often prevent people of various identities from joining in making activities. What can we do to revolutionize our spaces and promote equity in access and participation? In this two-hour workshop, we'll take participants on an exploratory journey through their own experiences to develop concrete ideas of how to promote equity in makerspaces. We'll use a digital interactive whiteboard to connect, discuss and find ways to develop an equity mindset. From this new mindset we can then derive ideas and first steps towards change and ingraining this new way of thinking so that it becomes habit.
