Abstract

A new method has been developed to determine the film thickness at outstroke and instroke of a reciprocating PTFE rod seal. For a particular seal the results allow to distinguish whether the quality of sealing is mainly attributed to a better wiping at the outstroke or, alternatively, to a beUer inward-pumping at the instroke. Theoretical results have been verified by experiments with thres seals of slightly different cross section. The static contact pressure of the PTFE seals was measured by a suitable test rig. In order to throw light upon a poor reproducability of leakage and friction of newly installed seals the run-in behaviour of bronze-filled PTFE seals has been deeply investigated. It was found that during run-in the sealing ability and the friction characteristics are subject to a typical change which can be attributed to a smoothing out of the PTFE-surface.
