Abstract

Welding of AlMgSi-alloys of the 6000 series in T4 condition suffer from a local reduction of the hardness, i.e. local softening of the heat-affected zone and the weld zone. This local softening results in an inhomogeneous hardness distribution, the so-called metallurgical notch effect, which leads to a reduction of the tensile strength of the component. The paper presents an in-process method that allows local hardness recovery in the metallurgical notch effect area. A post-weld laser heat treatment process was designed, which reduces the process time to less than one minute. To achieve precipitation hardening in the zone of the metallurgical notch effect, the process parameters for the post-weld laser heat treatment were estimated with an analytical model. The benefit of the post-weld laser heat treatment strategy was demonstrated experimentally.
