Abstract
The diphenyls MPh2 (M = Be, Mg, Zn, Cd, Hg) were treated with pyrazine (Pz) in THF. Only the Mg deriv. undergoes electron transfer to yield the 1:1 radical complex [Pz(MgPh)]. However, in the presence of Na or K, persistent 1:2 complexes I are formed with M = Be, Mg, Zn. Use of the higher homologs CdPh2 and HgPh2 leads to redn. to the metals. The 1:2 complexes were characterized by ESR spectroscopy; metal coupling consts. of 9Be, 25Mg and 67Zn could be detd. in natural isotopic abundance. [on SciFinder(R)]
