We present solutions for RDM developed within the DFG-Funded Cluster of Excellence EXC2075 Data-Integrated Simulation Science (SimTech). After an introduction to the scientific context and challenges faced by simulation scientists, we outline the general data management infrastructure and present tools that address these challenges. Exemplary domain applications demonstrate the use and benefits of the proposed data management software solutions. Especially in non-IT specific disciplines, the lack of documentation is attributed to the lack of training, the lack of time or missing rewards. This article addresses the hypothesis that scientists do document but do not know exactly what they need to document, why, and for whom. In order to evaluate the actual documentation practice of research software, we examined existing recommendations, and we evaluated their implementation in everyday practice using a concrete example from the engineering sciences and compared the findings with best practice examples. To get a broad overview of what documentation of research software entailed, we defined categories and used them to conduct the research. Our results show that the big picture of what documentation of research software means is missing. Recommendations do not consider the important role of researchers, who write research software, whose documentation takes mainly place in their research articles. However, regulations such as copyright law can prevent this practice and thereby hamper scientific progress. In Germany, text-based research disciplines have for a long time been mostly unable to publish corpora made from material outside of the public domain, effectively excluding contemporary works. While there are approaches to obfuscate text material in a way that it is no longer covered by the original copyright, many use cases still require the raw textual context for evaluation or follow-up research. Recent changes in copyright now permit text and data mining on copyrighted works. However, questions regarding reusability and sharing of such corpora at a later time are still not answered to a satisfying degree. We propose a workflow that allows interested third parties to access customized excerpts of protected corpora in accordance with current German copyright law and the soon to be implemented guidelines of the Digital Single Market directive. Usually the research results are published in a publication, whereas the underlying software and data resulting from the software is not available. Consequently, the results which are discussed in an article can be difficult to reproduce. Initiatives like the FAIR data principles try to give an idea how research data can be stored in order to reuse research results. Open Educational Resources spielen dagegen in vielen Fällen eine eher untergeordnete Rolle. Grundsätzlich ist zu beobachten, dass OA-Angebote in einzelnen Fachbereichen unterschiedlich wahrgenommen werden. Ingenieurwissenschaften sind durch ihre Anwendungsorientierung durch Industriekooperationen gut mit Geldmitteln ausgestattet und weniger auf öffentliche Drittmittel angewiesen, was ein Grund für den geringeren Umfang von OA-Publikationen sein kann. Gleichzeitig standen sie bisher nicht im Fokus der OA-Dienste. Im OpenIng-Projekt wurde aus diesem Grund eine Umfrage durchgeführt, um das Publikationsverhalten von Ingenieurinnen und Ingenieuren zu untersuchen. Nur so ist es möglich, bedarfsorientierte und zielgerichtete Dienste zu entwickeln. Die Umfrage hat gezeigt, dass bei der anvisierten Zielgruppe durchaus ein OA-Bewusstsein vorhanden ist, aber dieses nicht ausreicht, das Publikationsverhalten zu verändern. Ein Grund dafür sind unter anderem die unklaren Rahmenbedingungen, wann und wie OA veröffentlicht werden kann.
