         "pages": "1\u20139","abstract": "The depiction of scanpaths from mobile eye-tracking recordings by thumbnails from the stimulus allows the application of visual computing to detect areas of interest in an unsupervised way. We suggest using nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF) to identify such areas in stimuli. For a user-defined integer k, NMF produces an explainable decomposition into k components, each consisting of a spatial representation associated with a temporal indicator. In the context of multiple eye-tracking recordings, this leads to k spatial representations, where the temporal indicator highlights the appearance within recordings. The choice of k provides an opportunity to control the refinement of the decomposition, i.e., the number of areas to detect. We combine our NMF-based approach with visualization techniques to enable an exploratory analysis of multiple recordings. Finally, we demonstrate the usefulness of our approach with mobile eye-tracking data of an art gallery.",

Four different silicone oils are used, covering a range of Reynolds number between \\$\\$116< \\backslashtext\\Re\\ <1106\\$\\$at two different initial wall film heights. The objective is to characterize the temporal and radial evolution of the velocity field within the crown crater by means of micro-PIV. Our findings show that the velocity field has the structure of an axisymmetric stagnation point flow with decaying strength a(t). The latter exhibits an exponential decay and can be explained in terms of the exponential decay of the pressure force exerted by the impacting droplet onto the wall film. In this context, the commonly accepted functional dependence \\$\\$a(t) \\backslashpropto t^\\-1\\\\$\\$represents only the first-order Taylor approximation of the exponential decay and has therefore only a limited temporal validity. The analysis also corroborates the existence of an inertial regime concerning the velocity field for \\$\\$\\\\backslashtext\\Re\\\\ > 270\\$\\$. This is not observed at lower Re numbers due to the increased pressure losses caused by the extensional (normal) strain during the radial spreading of the lamella. To validate these findings a holistic approach is chosen, which combines numerical results, analytical solutions and experimental data from literature. In particular, by using the continuity equation, it is shown that the experimental decay of the wall film height can be reconstructed from the velocity measurements. Consilience of results from different approaches provides a robust validation of the micro-PIV data obtained in this work.",

         "pages": "1-16","abstract": "Seasonal-trend decomposition based on loess (STL) is a powerful tool to explore time series data visually. In this paper, we present an extension of STL to uncertain data, named uncertainty-aware STL (UASTL). Our method propagates multivariate Gaussian distributions mathematically exactly through the entire analysis and visualization pipeline. Thereby, stochastic quantities shared between the components of the decomposition are preserved. Moreover, we present application scenarios with uncertainty modeling based on Gaussian processes, e.g., data with uncertain areas or missing values. Besides these mathematical results and modeling aspects, we introduce visualization techniques that address the challenges of uncertainty visualization and the problem of visualizing highly correlated components of a decomposition. The global uncertainty propagation enables the time series visualization with STL-consistent samples, the exploration of correlation between and within decomposition's components, and the analysis of the impact of varying uncertainty. Finally, we show the usefulness of UASTL and the importance of uncertainty visualization with several examples. Thereby, a comparison with conventional STL is performed.",

         "volume": "908","pages": "A36","abstract": "The influence of miscibility and liquid wettability during droplet impact onto thin wall films is investigated experimentally. Despite similar liquid properties and impact conditions, differences in the splashing limit, in the crown extension and in the duration of the ascending phase are observed. These differences are related to the interfacial tension of the droplet/wall-film liquid pairs, which is linked to their miscibility and wettability. More precisely, by calculating the crown surface energy, we show that the energy stored in the interface between droplet and wall film (if any) is not negligible and leads to smaller crown extensions and tendentially the need for more kinetic energy to initiate splashing. Similarly, by calculating a modified capillary time taking into account all surface and interfacial tensions, we show that the interfacial tension acts as a non-negligible recoiling force, which reduces the duration of the ascending phase. The dynamics of this ascending phase is well captured for different wall-film thicknesses if accounting for the variations of the liquid masses in movement. Overall, droplet/wall-film interactions can be seen as inertio-capillary systems where the interfacial tension between droplet and wall film plays a significant role in the storage of energy and in the crown kinetics during the impact process. In addition, this analysis highlights that viscous losses have already a significant effect during the crown extension phase, by dissipating almost half of the initial energies for droplet impact onto thin wall films, and most likely by influencing the capillary time scale through damping.",
