Included is the incorporation of several Group 14 elements into charge-compensated carboranes.  These species present a bonding pattern not found in other main group carboranes.  In addn. to the authors' continuing studies of the syntheses and structures of organometallic compds., the use of these compds. as catalysts and catalyst precursors was studied.  The isotopic exchange reactions between 10B enriched B hydrides with naturally abundant boranes catalyzed by Ru(0) nanoparticles was studied.  The Ru(0) nanoparticles were obtained by the redn. of [CpRuCp*RuCp*]PF6 (Cp* = C5Me5) with H and stabilized by the ionic liq. trihexyltetradecylphosphonium dodecylbenzenesulfonate [THTdP][DBS].  This is an excellent, long lived catalyst for the exchange reaction of B-10 enriched diborane and naturally abundant decaborane(14).  Other approaches to the prodn. and use of nano-metal catalysts also were explored.  The redn. of the Ir carborane, (PPh3)2IrH(7,8-C2B9H11) with hydrogen in the presence of trihexyltetradecylphosphonium methylsulfonate, [THTdP][MS], produced Ir(0) nanoparticles that catalyzed the phenylborolation as did the authors' Ir(sal:N-R)(COD) (sal = salicylaldiminato, R = CH2Ph, Ph; COD = cyclooctadiene) complexes.  Progress in the use of single wall C nanotubes (SWCNT) as B delivery agents is also discussed. [on SciFinder(R)]",

In this paper a new approach is proposed to the design of locally optimal controllers. It is iterative by nature, and starting from any initial feasible controller it performs local optimization over a suitably defined non-convex function at each iteration. The approach features the properties of computational efficiency, guaranteed convergence to a local optimum, and applicability to a very wide range of problems. Furthermore, a fast (but conservative) LMI-based procedure for computing an initially feasible controller is also presented. The complete approach is demonstrated on a model of one joint of a real-life space robotic manipulator. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.",
