These technologies have to fully utilise the material's advantageous properties. They also have to consider the material's requirements with regard to production accurateness. This paper presents a construction technology for prefabricated thin-walled elements made of UHPFRC. The technology developed by the authors allows for an easy assembly, disassembly and recyclability of the UHPFRC elements, making maximum use of the material's properties. The construction technology uses built-in parts, so called implants, to pointwise connect thin-walled elements and to transfer high connection forces. The paper explains the general design of the implant components as well as their load-bearing behaviour under punctual compression loads.",

Some innovative concepts use gravity based hybrid constructions.\nAn economically and ecologically promising alternative could be the substitution of the steel tower by a centrically prestressed tower that combines the use of ultra-high performance fibre reinforced concrete (UHPFRC) with the segmental construction method.\nIn this paper the concept of the UHPFRC tower structure is presented. Within the limits of the conceptual design an Eigen frequency analysis was conducted. The results of the analysis were evaluated with respect to the Campbell-Diagram and point to the feasibility of this innovative concept.",

The team of Werner Sobek Stuttgart was selected for the design development of the concrete structure, and for all design phases of the very slender and elegant steel roof structure which spans almost 200 m with a perceptible structural height of 3 m only. In order to optimize the performance of windows under varying conditions, much effort has been directed towards the development of adaptive glazing systems based on smart materials. This article will outline the functional principles and properties of the most promising of such systems. By modifying conventional liquid crystal technologies used for display screens and introducing new materials and processes, a switchable glazing system with unique and promising characteristics was developed by the author. Therefore the issue of how to join the elements is of highest importance. Dry joints allow the transfer of compressive and shear forces, whereby the magnitude of the transferable shear force depends amongst others on the cohesion factor and the friction coefficient. Values for these are stated in the respective design codes depending on the roughness of the joint surface. However, the classification of the surface roughness is often not very exact so that an experimental verification of the cohesion factor and the friction coefficient is advisable.\nLafarge commissioned the Institute for Lightweight Structures and Conceptual Design (ILEK) at the University of Stuttgart to carry out an experimental investigation to determine the effect of different surface roughnesses on the load-bearing behaviour of dry joints between precast elements made of UHPFRC.",

Following an experimental approach towards the exploration of new technologies within an interdisciplinary setting, students are encouraged to develop innovative ideas from a variety of subject areas not necessarily linked to architecture, and to explore their application and opportunities in an architectural con-text. A selection of resulting projects is presented along with a discussion of the benefits of the educational approach.",

"volume": "23","number": "3","pages": "346--354","abstract": "Thin double-curved shell structures are often found in architecture and engineering when large areas are spanned without intermediate supports. Due to their large span and low weight, the influence of external loads, like snow and wind, is significant and may lead to inefficiencies in the load bearing behavior as well as induce vibrations. Research has shown that such negative effects can be compensated by adding active components to the structure, allowing a load- and oscillation-dependent response to improve structural stability. A principal requirement of such systems is the determination of the current state through the implementation of appropriate sensors. This paper presents a method for optimal sensor placement on shell structures such that the state of oscillation of the system can be reconstructed and model-based methods for active vibration damping can be applied. The method uses the number of sensors as a surrogate for implementation cost and an observability measure as optimization objectives. The latter is derived from the observability gramian and considers the average observation energy. The influence of measurement noise and model uncertainties on the observability of the system is taken into account explicitly. The method is tested on a flexible thin shell structure that is modeled by Finite Element Methods using ANSYS. The equations of motion are transformed into modal space where model reduction methods are applied. The resulting model is used to optimize the sensor locations. The optimization is performed by the Multi-objective Simulated Annealing algorithm. The proposed concept is tested on an experimental plant and optimization results and exemplary optimal sensor configurations are presented. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.",

As being part of the development of a construction technique for thin walled elements made of UHPFRC by the use of implants, the design of structural components, carrying the tensile forces in the area of load introductions and connections, is being required and will be presented in this paper. An experimental study on pull out tests on thin walled elements made of UHPFRC was carried out to analyze the general bond behavior of thin, perforated and armatured steel sheets. The influence of geometrical and boundary conditions as well as the variation constructive parameters will be presented. The focus of investigation was on the maximal pull out force, bond strength, cracking and splitting behavior of the samples.",
