"abstract": "Data plays a fundamental role in advancing knowledge and driving research across all fields. Despite the abundance of data, several challenges still need to be addressed. These challenges include limited accessibility, heterogeneous data, lack of interconnections between associated topics, difficulty retrieving required information, semantic mismatches, and several other challenges. Ontologies provide a structured method to address these challenges effectively.\r\nThis study addresses two central aspects of ontology research. First, it details the multidisciplinary ontology development process, highlighting the challenges, mitigation strategies, and impacts on domain data management. It then offers guidelines for beginners and individuals with a background in data management on effective engagement in ontology creation.\r\nSecond, it introduces the Ontology for Multiscale Simulation methods (Onto-MS), constructed by following the guidelines from the first part. The ontology, developed in Web Ontology Language (OWL) using Protégé, integrates with other ontologies, such as the Elementary Multiperspective Material Ontology (EMMO), aligning this research with the Linked Data concept. A custom Python script was used to incorporate the ontology into an Electronic Laboratory Notebook (ELN), enabling the automatic creation of knowledge graphs and systematic data organization conforming to the ontology.\r\nThis research successfully answers the fundamental questions in interdisciplinary or domain-level ontology development. Onto-MS provides a robust framework for organizing and linking data in multiscale simulations within computational materials science. Furthermore, ontology incorporation into an ELN simplifies its integration into data management practices. While ontology development is ongoing, the current version is functional and continuously refined with new insights and feedback.",

The Virtual Materials Marketplace (VIMMP), which is open to all service providers and clients, provides a framework for offering and accessing such services, assisting the uptake of novel modelling and simulation approaches by SMEs, consultants, and industrial R&D end users. Semantic assets presented include the EngMeta metadata schema for research data infrastructures in simulation-based engineering and the collection of ontologies from VIMMP, including the ontology for simulation, modelling, and optimization (OSMO) and the VIMMP software ontology (VISO).",

"abstract": "Domain-specific metadata standards, including ontologies, markup languages, and technical interface specifications, are a necessary component of solutions for FAIR research data management with industrial applications. The Workshop on Domain Ontologies for Research Data Management in Industry Commons of Materials and Manufacturing (DORIC-MM 2021) discusses the state of the art, challenges, and perspectives for continuing innovation in this field. The present work comments on the landscape of semantic assets in the field of materials modelling, covering electronic, atomistic, mesoscopic, and continuum methods. Summaries are given of particularly promising lines of work, including the CAPE-OPEN interface standard, the XML schemas EngMeta, CML, and ThermoML, and the ontologies OntoCAPE, Metadata4Ing/Metadata4HPC, OSMO (the ontology version of MODA) and the VIMMP system of ontologies, and the domain-level modules of the European Materials and Modelling Ontology (EMMO). For future work, it is recommended to emphasize advancing in accordance with five principles: 1. Diversification of technologies; 2. Observation of practices; 3. Realistic objectives; 4. Incentives for providing citable data and software; 5. Co-design of simulation and data technology.",

"volume": "15","number": "1","abstract": "Research data as the true valuable good in science must be saved and subsequently kept findable, accessible and reusable for reasons of proper scientific conduct for a time span of several years. However, managing long-term storage of research data is a burden for institutes and researchers. Because of the sheer size and the required retention time apt storage providers are hard to find.\r\n\r\nAiming to solve this puzzle, the bwDataArchive project started development of a long-term research data archive that is reliable, cost effective and able store multiple petabytes of data. The hardware consists of data storage on magnetic tape, interfaced with disk caches and nodes for data movement and access. On the software side, the High Performance Storage System (HPSS) was chosen for its proven ability to reliably store huge amounts of data. However, the implementation of bwDataArchive is not dependant on HPSS. For authentication the bwDataArchive is integrated into the federated identity management for educational institutions in the State of Baden-Württemberg in Germany.\r\n\r\nThe archive features data protection by means of a dual copy at two distinct locations on different tape technologies, data accessibility by common storage protocols, data retention assurance for more than ten years, data preservation with checksums, and data management capabilities supported by a flexible directory structure allowing sharing and publication. As of September 2019, the bwDataArchive holds over 9 PB and 90 million files and sees a constant increase in usage and users from many communities.",

"pages": "2909-2920","abstract": "Simulation optimization is attracting increasing research interest from the modeling and simulation community. Although there is much research on how to apply various simulation optimization techniques to solve numerous practical and research problems, researchers find that existing optimization routines are difficult to extend or integrate and often require one to develop their own optimization methods because the existing ones are problem-specific and not designed for reuse. In order to facilitate reuse of the available optimization routines and better capture the essence of different simulation optimization techniques, an ontology for simulation optimization (SoPT) is devised. SoPT includes concepts from both conventional optimization/mathematical programming and simulation optimization. Represented in ontological form, optimization routines can also be transformed into actual executable application code (e.g., targeting JSIM or ScalaTion). As illustrative examples, SoPT is being applied to real scientific computational problems.",
