The present eye-tracking study, which investigated processing of attachment ambiguities of an adjunct in Spanish, suggests that readers sometimes underspecify attachment to save memory resources, consistent with the good-enough account of parsing. Our results confirm a surprising prediction of the good-enough account: high-capacity readers commit to an attachment decision more often than low-capacity participants, leading to more errors and a greater need to reanalyze in garden-path sentences. These results emerged only when we separated functionally different types of regressive eye movements using a scanpath analysis; conventional eye-tracking measures alone would have led to different conclusions. The scanpath analysis also showed that rereading was the dominant strategy for recovering from garden-pathing. Our results may also have broader implications for models of reading processes: reanalysis effects in eye movements occurred late, which suggests that the coupling of oculo-motor control and the parser may not always be as tight as assumed in current computational models of eye movements control in reading.",

An important yet missing contextual dimension is the cognitive context that comprises all aspects related to mental information processing, such as perception, memory, knowledge, or learning. In this work we investigate the feasibility of recognising visual memory recall. We use a recognition methodology that combines minimum redundancy maximum relevance feature selection (mRMR) with a support vector machine (SVM) classifier. We validate the methodology in a dual user study with a total of fourteen participants looking at familiar and unfamiliar pictures from four picture categories: abstract, landscapes, faces, and buildings. Using person-independent training, we are able to discriminate between familiar and unfamiliar abstract pictures with a top recognition rate of 84.3% (89.3% recall, 21.0% false positive rate) over all participants. We show that eye movement analysis is a promising approach to infer the cognitive context of a person and discuss the key challenges for the real-world implementation of eye-based cognition-aware systems.",

"pages": "18:1-18:10","abstract": "The advent of multi-/many-core processors in clusters advocates hybrid parallel programming,\r\nwhich combines Message Passing Interface (MPI) for inter-node parallelism with a shared\r\nmemory model for on-node parallelism. Compared to the traditional hybrid approach\r\nof MPI plus OpenMP, a new, but promising hybrid approach of MPI plus MPI-3 shared-memory\r\nextensions (MPI+MPI) is gaining attraction. We describe an algorithmic approach for\r\ncollective operations (with allgather and broadcast as concrete examples) in the context\r\nof hybrid MPI+MPI, so as to minimize memory consumption and memory copies. With this\r\napproach, only one memory copy is maintained and shared by on-node processes. This\r\nallows the removal of unnecessary on-node copies of replicated data that are required\r\nbetween MPI processes when the collectives are invoked in the context of pure MPI.\r\nWe compare our approach of collectives for hybrid MPI+MPI and the traditional one\r\nfor pure MPI, and also have a discussion on the synchronization that is required to\r\nguarantee data integrity. The performance of our approach has been validated on a\r\nCray XC40 system (Cray MPI) and NEC cluster (Open MPI), showing that it achieves comparable\r\nor better performance for allgather operations. We have further validated our approach\r\nwith a standard computational kernel, namely distributed matrix multiplication, and\r\na Bayesian Probabilistic Matrix Factorization code.",

The novel shared-memory parallelization scheme allows to re- tain Newton's third law optimization and exhibits very good scaling on many-core devices such as a full Xeon Phi card running 240 threads. The Xeon Phi can thus be exploited and delivers comparable performance as IvyBridge nodes in our experiments.",
