With a video analysis based on Grounded Theory and Situational Analysis, we untangle the promises of AR for manufacturing and construction work; second, we present two prevailing configurations of AR users: \u2018experts in situ\u2019 and \u2018smart dummies\u2019; and third, we discuss how YouTube videos put forward developmental expectations. In addition, we identify discrepancies between expectations and foreseeable requirements in construction work. Finally, our research could contribute to a more holistic understanding of workplaces and socially robust AR applications.",

One approach that corresponds to this algorithmic regime is computational design, an umbrella term for combining various digital and computational methods, software and technologies, typically based on data and algorithms. As relational and hybrid arrangements, the algorithmic infrastructures of computational design are subjected to a continuous process of infrastructuring, that is, care and cure coming from social, political, and technological actions. This chapter examines such infrastructuring processes in architecture and construction that have begun to set up a specific form of optimizing design and the built environment according to the calculative rationalities of the algorithmic regime.",

         "volume": "26","number": "3","pages": "267-278","abstract": "In this article, we argue that in order to properly assess the potentials, challenges, and implications of the digital transformation in architecture and construction, we need to better understand the political-economic dynamics behind it and examine it in light of the current reorganisation of global capitalism. The focus of this article is therefore on the larger political-economic and techno-economic conditions that are shaping the implementation of digital technologies in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) sector. Based on document analysis on the digital turn in architecture and construction, along with interviews with AEC professionals, we argue that the logic of platform capitalism is beginning to transform the industry, with Building Information Modelling (BIM) acting as an obligatory passage point and government policies as gate-openers. The article, first, discusses concepts of platform and platform capitalism and indicates how these apply to recent reconfigurations of actor and power relations in the field. Second, it reviews some of the developments in digital architecture from 2D drawings to BIM and beyond. Third, it examines the role of government policies as driving forces in the digital transformation. Forth, it takes a closer look at the case of software producer Autodesk and their BIM product Revit, which illustrates how the logic of platform capitalism has gained traction in architecture and construction. Finally, it concludes that some expectations can be derived from these observations: In the realm of design software, we can expect a further concentration of economic power and a near-monopolistic structure of the market. Moreover, we can expect a shift of focus and investment from architectural design to socio-digital modes of construction and urban planning that benefit primarily real estate owners, investors, developers, and construction companies. Furthermore, we can expect large construction firms to secure themselves a comfortable starting position as early adopters, while SMEs are facing bigger challenges to benefit from the digital transformation. Lastly, we can expect a further encroachment of tech giants and domain outsiders such as Alphabet into architecture and construction, turning buildings and cities into machines for data extraction.",

First, we map out the landscape of digital visions regarding the future of construction by examining pertinent academic, public, and professional discourses in recent years. We identify a vision of industrialised construction, a vision of data-based integration, a vision of singularised architecture, a vision of digital sustainability, and an emerging vision of the \u201Ctwin green and digital transition.\u201D In a diachronic perspective, we zoom in to UK \u201CBIM-and-beyond\u201D policy from 2011 to 2021 and show how BIM has evolved from a digital design tool into a critical component for building a national system of data-assets for data-based value creation. Ausgehend von den enormen Potenzialen und Herausforderungen sowie der ambivalenten Bewertung der Digitalisierung in der Branche selbst, zeigen die Autorinnen die verschiedenen Formen der Digitalisierung in Architektur, Planungs- und Bauwesen auf und die mit ihnen verbundenen, teils  widersprüchlichen Zukunftsvorstellungen. Die Bauwelten der Zukunft, so wird deutlich, sind noch nicht festgelegt und bewegen sich zwischen einer digital und computerbasiert vorangetriebenen Verbesserung der Produktivität, Integration der Wertschöpfungskette, maßgeschneiderten, spektakulären Bauwerken oder nachhaltigeren Bauprozessen. Die Analyse macht deutlich, dass nicht alle vier Leitvorstellungen die gleichen Durchsetzungschancen haben. Da aber digitale Technologien das Bauen der Zukunft fundamental verändern werden, gilt es, sich heute mit den Zielkonflikten zu befassen.",
