"pages": "1-4","abstract": "We present a high linearity 2-bit digital-to-analog converter (DAC) implemented in an InP/GaInAs DHBT technology. The DAC is based upon the current steering architecture. Cascode structure and layout techniques, i.e. static shuffling and dummy devices, have been used to enhance the linearity. The DAC exhibits static integral/differential nonlinearities of 5.5 × 10-3 LSB, equivalent to a resolution of 9.2 bits. Dynamic measurements qualitatively show proper behavior at 6 GS/s, while simulations with typical on-chip load exhibit sufficiently fast settling at 20 GS/s.",

"pages": "1491--1497","abstract": "Electrical machines with 3D magnetic flux are one option, to increase power and torque density compared to conventional machines. One of these machines is the transverse flux machine which offers high torque at low speeds. However, due to material or geometric limitations, these machines have not been widely implemented thus far. The development of additive manufacturing in the field of soft magnetic materials has opened up new possibilities for the transverse flux machine. This paper presents, how the newly available materials and the integration of air slots in an existing stator open up new potentials for the transverse flux machine, mainly by reducing eddy currents. Here, a sensitivity analysis shows the influence of the slots on the machine performance. By selecting the best slot parameters, a significant increase in performance compared to the original machine can be achieved at a comparable efficiency.",

"pages": "455--458","abstract": "The use of modern GaN and SiC power semiconductors in soft-switching power electronic applications makes it possible to minimize switching losses and to achieve a significant increase in power density. However, the loss mechanisms in soft-switching operation of power semiconductors are poorly under-stood and electrical measurements of these losses are affected by a large error. Therefore calorimetric measuring methods are becoming state of the art for determining soft-switching losses. This paper for the first time presents empirical power dissipation data for high voltage GaN and SiC power semiconductors of low power class at application-oriented switching frequencies for zero voltage switching (ZVS) operation. The losses were measured using a transient calorimetric measurement setup with the goal of determining also low power dissipation with high accuracy while maintaining the application-oriented commutation cell layout.",

"abstract": "The magnitude of energy, which is extracted by tidal energy converter\r\n devices, has a significant impact on the commercial viability of\r\n an entire project. Therefore a substantialcharacterization of the\r\n tidal current at the location of interest and subsequently a confident\r\n prediction of the electricity production of the tidal energy converter\r\n at an early stage of the project is of high interest. This paper\r\n deals with a method to estimate the production of a single device\r\n using results from a 2D shallow water equation model combined with\r\n turbine performance curves and its validation by performance data\r\n from operations of the Voith prototype HyTide 110-5.3 under real\r\n conditions in Jindo, South Korea. A recently developed 2D shallow\r\n water equation solver based on OpenFOAM (tidalFoam) is used to accurately\r\n simulate the tidal current around the installation location of the\r\n device.High-resolved bathymetry data, shorelines and tidal elevation\r\n at the open boundaries of the unstructured mesh is used to set up\r\n the model. The bottom friction as an additional implicit source term\r\n in the model is used to calibrate the simulation against Acoustic\r\n Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) measurements at site. The expected\r\n electricity production is compared with actual field measurements\r\n during the operation of the Voith scaled demonstrator. The complete\r\n analysis and results gives valuable and significant confidence in\r\n the performance expectation of the single tidal turbine. The results\r\n show that the production of single devices can be accurately estimated.\r\n This grants an important first input to commercial evaluations of\r\n future tidal energy projects.",
