The unicellular eukaryote ciliate Tetrahymena can tolerate high concentrations of cytotoxic metals and is known to have developed several detoxification strategies, in particular the intracellular bioaccumulation. In this study, we systematically investigated the process of tolerance and intracellular bioaccumulation of several metals (La, Ce, Sm, Eu, Gd, Dy, Fe, and Al) in three species of the ciliate Tetrahymena (T. pyriformis, T. thermophila, and T. pigmentosa). In all three species and for all tested elements, treatment of the cells with dissolved metals in an organic growth medium leads to an intracellular bioaccumulation and formation of biogenic metal-containing particles within the food vacuoles of the cells. Stable particles are excreted into the surrounding medium within 2 h. The particles have a species-dependent diameter between 2.4 and 3.2 µm and consist of the respective added metal La, Ce, Sm, Eu, Gd, Dy, Fe, or Al together with the elements C, O, P, Na, Mg, K, and Ca. Intracellular bioaccumulation is associated with a 26–87 % depletion of the rare earth element concentrations in the medium within 48 h. The understanding of microbial bioaccumulation pathways is a promising approach for the development of new bio-inspired strategies for recycling or remediation applications.
Aluminium matrix composites (AMC) do combine a high lightweight potential with a wide range of specific mechanical or thermal properties, depending on their material composition or the content of reinforcement particles, respectively. Currently, the three main production technologies for manufacturing such AMC are powder metallurgy, semi-solid processes and casting. Here, the AMC´s reinforcement proportion that can be processed depends on the chosen manufacturing strategy and is therefore often limited to a maximum value of 30 vol. \\%, due to agglomeration and porosity problems. In this context, the main objective is to understand the fundamental mixing behaviour of powder mixtures for AMC green body production having reinforcement contents of up to 50 vol.\\% SiC p . For this purpose, powder mixtures of monomodal AlSi7Mg0.6 and different SiC p fractions were prepared with different mixing times and speeds to investigate the influence of these mixing parameters on the homogeneity of the particle distribution. Afterwards, the influence of powder size on the mixing process was investigated. The results showed that a slower mixing speed resulted in faster homogenisation as well as a larger particle size can be faster mixed. Furthermore, a regression model was developed using mixing time, speed and particle loading, to determine sufficient mixing parameters.",

Dynamic methods, such as Particle System and Dynamic Relaxation, have become an important topic on this subject with major efforts entirely focused on speeding up rates of numerical convergence. Fast simulations simplify the development of design iterations, but designers are still forced to break the integration process when topological changes need to be introduced for fulfilling a given design intention. As the exploration of elastic structures becomes more integrated within architectural design agendas, there is a growing necessity to introduce more flexible numerical models for design conceptualization. In this paper we introduce the conceptual framework for a generic Particle System model built on principles of combinatorial maps and graph theory that is designed to support topological transformations on the fly. The computational implementation of the proposed model is demonstrated with two types of data structures. However, full six-dimensional (6D) motion tracking has yet to be achieved. Here, we developed synchronized 3D translation and 3D rotation tracking of single diamond particles based on nitrogen-vacancy center sensing. We first performed 6D tracking of diamond particles attached to a giant plasma membrane vesicle to demonstrate the method. Quantitative analysis of diamond particles' motion allowed elimination of the geometric effect and revealed the net rotation on the vesicle. 6D tracking was then applied to measure live cell dynamics. Motion characteristics of nanodiamonds on cell membranes under various controlled physiological conditions suggest that the nanodiamonds' rotation is associated with cell metabolic activities. Our technique extends the toolbox of single particle tracking and provides a unique solution to problems where correlated analysis of translation and rotation is critical.",

Those techniques are necessary, as the control algorithms acting on the actuators of the adaptive structures need to know the system's state, but not all states are accessible for measurement. We model and simulate a truss structure, which is equipped with inertial sensors, strain gauges, and an optical scanning system. The latter performs a point-wise scan of the truss structure's surface, which renders the measurement equation time-varying. The truss structure is excited by wind in the simulation. We implement a particle filter in order to perform the multimodal sensor fusion and state estimation. The particle filter shows good results for both an unexcited scenario as well as for a wind excitation scenario. We discuss the results as well as the implications for the active control of adaptive structures.
1
9
In this final project, we discuss the theory of Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) and its implementation in Matlab. SPH is a particle-based method for computational fluid dynamics. We apply SPH to study the time evolution of a toy star model and find its equilibrium state. The goal of this paper is to demonstrate the SPH works successfully, therefore we apply it to problems where analytic solutions are known to exist and compare numerical and theoretical answers. We also consider a toy collision problem of two polytropic bodies. SPH is found to give reliable answers and is a useful method for computational fluid dynamics.
1--6
Apoptosis, the programmed cell death, is a physiological process that handles the removal of unwanted or damaged cells in living organisms. The process itself is initiated by signaling through tumor necrosis factor (TNF) receptors and ligands, which form clusters on the cell membrane. The exact function of this process is not yet fully understood and currently subject of basic research. Different mathematical models have been developed to describe and simulate the apoptotic receptor-clustering.
In this interdisciplinary work, a previously introduced model of the apoptotic receptor-clustering has been extended by a new receptor type to allow a more precise description and simulation of the signaling process. Due to the high computational requirements of the model, an ef?cient algorithmic mapping to a modern many-core GPGPU architecture has been developed. Such architectures enable high-performance computing (HPC) simulation tasks on the desktop at low costs. The developed mapping reduces average simulation times from months to days (peak speedup of 256x), allowing the productive use of the model in research.
424--431
Computational biology contributes important solutions for major biological challenges. Unfortunately, most applications in computational biology are highly computeintensive and associated with extensive computing times. Biological problems of interest are often not treatable with traditional simulation models on conventional multi-core CPU systems. This interdisciplinary work introduces a new multi-timescale simulation model for apoptotic receptor-clustering and a new parallel evaluation algorithm that exploits the computational performance of heterogeneous CPU-GPU computing systems. For this purpose, the different dynamics involved in receptor-clustering are separated and simulated on two timescales. Additionally, the time step sizes are adaptively refined on each timescale independently.
This new approach improves the simulation performance significantly and reduces computing times from months to hours for observation times of several seconds.",
