         "volume": "151","pages": "104889","abstract": "Coreless filament winding extends established industrial processes, enabling the fabrication of building parts with minimal formwork. Since the part's final geometry is unknown until completed, it creates uncertainties for design and engineering. Existing architectural design workflows are insufficient, and industrial software packages cannot capture the complexity of self-deforming fibres to model complex fibre layups. This research introduces a feedback-based computational method conceived as four development cycles to design and evaluate fibre layups of large-scale architectural building components, and a multi-scalar digital-physical design and evaluation toolset to model and evaluate them at multiple resolutions. The universal applicability of the developed methods is showcased by two different architectural fibre structures. The results show how the systematization of methods and toolset allow for increased design flexibility and deeper integration of interdisciplinary collaborators. They constitute an important step towards a consolidated co-design methodology and demonstrate the potential to simultaneously co-evolve design and evaluation methods.",

Different systems of differential equations are derived by taking various physical modelling aspects into account, according to the particular application. In any case an either semi- or quasilinear hyperbolic or parabolic evolution problem for the displacement of an elastic membrane is coupled with an elliptic moving boundary problem that determines the electrostatic potential in the region occupied by the elastic membrane and a rigid ground plate. Of particular interest in all models is the influence of different classes of permittivity profiles. \r\n   \"The subsequent analytical investigations are restricted to a dissipation dominated regime for the membrane's displacement. For the resulting parabolic evolution problems local well-posedness, global existence, the occurrence of finite-time singularities, and convergence of solutions to those of the so-called small-aspect ratio model, respectively, are investigated. Furthermore, a topic is addressed that is of note not till non-constant permittivity profiles are taken into account\u2014the direction of the membrane's deflection or, in mathematical parlance, the sign of the solution to the evolution problem.          "volume": "133","pages": "105347","abstract": "Insight into the global deformation of the urinary bladder during passive and active phases is crucial for understanding the biomechanics and function of the organ. Therefore, in the present study, the three-dimensional deformations of the porcine urinary bladder were investigated using 10 cameras in ex vivo experiments. Voltages between 20 V and 40 V were applied to induce contraction without outflow (isovolumetric) and against different back pressures (isobaric). The fluid volume in the bladder and the fluid volume pushed out of the bladder in the active state were measured. During filling, a roughly constant pressure of 2.5\u20134 cmH2O was measured for a large volume range, followed by a steep increase. Overall, the urinary bladder shape changes from elliptical to spherical in the active phase, resulting in a more homogeneous stress field. The active pressure decreases with increasing volume, while the actively generated stress increases up to 65 kPa at the maximum volume examined. Smaller filling volumes and lower back pressures allowed complete emptying, whereas higher back pressures prevent full emptying from larger filling states. Finally, a recently developed three-dimensional model was used to describe the active and passive bladder characteristics in order to qualitatively represent the mechanical properties. Overall, this study provides for the first time a comprehensive experimental data set at organ level that leads to an improved understanding of load transfer mechanisms within the urinary bladder and serves to validate corresponding models.",

The presented method enables a more versatile approach to the design of multi-storey timber buildings, which should increase their applicability to a diverse range of building typologies.",

These changes in perfusion affect hepatic functions via direct alterations in blood supply and drainage, followed by indirect changes of biomechanical tissue properties and cellular function. Changes in blood flow impose compression, tension and shear forces on the liver tissue. These forces are perceived by mechanosensors on parenchymal and non-parenchymal cells of the liver and regulate cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions as well as cellular signaling and metabolism. These interactions are key players in tissue growth and remodeling, a prerequisite to restore tissue function after PHx. Their dysregulation is associated with metabolic impairment of the liver eventually leading to liver failure, a serious post-hepatectomy complication with high morbidity and mortality. Though certain links are known, the overall functional change after liver surgery is not understood due to complex feedback loops, non-linearities, spatial heterogeneities and different time-scales of events. Computational modeling is a unique approach to gain a better understanding of complex biomedical systems. This approach allows (i) integration of heterogeneous data and knowledge on multiple scales into a consistent view of how perfusion is related to hepatic function; (ii) testing and generating hypotheses based on predictive models, which must be validated experimentally and clinically. Here, we review the alterations of hepatic perfusion, biomechanical properties and function associated with hepatectomy. Specifically, we provide an overview over the clinical problem, preoperative diagnostics, functional imaging approaches, experimental approaches in animal models, mechanoperception in the liver and impact on cellular metabolism, omics approaches with a focus on transcriptomics, data integration and uncertainty analysis, and computational modeling on multiple scales. Finally, we provide a perspective on how multi-scale computational models, which couple perfusion changes to hepatic function, could become part of clinical workflows to predict and optimize patient outcome after complex liver surgery.",

Specifically, we provide an overview over the clinical problem, preoperative diagnostics, functional imaging approaches, experimental approaches in animal models, mechanoperception in the liver and impact on cellular metabolism, omics approaches with a focus on transcriptomics, data integration and uncertainty analysis, and computational modeling on multiple scales. Finally, we provide a perspective on how multi-scale computational models, which couple perfusion changes to hepatic function, could become part of clinical workflows to predict and optimize patient outcome after complex liver surgery.",

This method features a multi-level agent simulation, that relies on a feedback loop between agent systems and structural simulations that update the agent environment. Such an approach can usefully be applied for the design of variable density timber slab systems, where material arrangements based on structural, fabrication, and architectural boundary conditions are necessary. Such arrangements can lead to multi-directional spanning slabs that can accept pointwise supports in unique layouts. We discuss the implementation of such a method on the basis of the structural design of a pavilion-scale multi-storey testing setup. The presented method enables a more versatile approach to the design of multi-storey timber buildings, which should increase their applicability to a diverse range of building typologies.",
