"volume": "50","number": "10","pages": "2771-2784","abstract": "The physical behaviour of materials and complicated components is nowadays numerically predicted by using the Finite Element Method (FEM). Another method, older than the finite element idea, is the Discrete Element Method (DEM), with which it is possible to make continuum-based calculations not only in the mechanical field but also in the thermal field, as will be shown in this paper. One major drawback of the FEM is that continuum-based methods are unable to include the stochastically distributed microscopic effects in the macroscopically oriented calculations. The Discrete Element Method is one method with which these effects can be considered. For making realistic fracture and life time predictions for components at high temperatures, it is important to adapt the DEM for the thermal field. This paper describes the mathematical proof of the 2D Discrete Element Method (or Lattice Model) for the thermal field. It will specifically be shown that the heat flux inside the framework can be transferred to the heat conduction equation. Furthermore, some examples demonstrate how the heat flux can be calculated with this method and how the corresponding material parameters are found and implemented. Also, as will be shown in this paper, anisotropic or orthotropic heat flux effects can be integrated in the DEM model.",

"abstract": "Digital human body models are used to simulate injuries that occur as a result of vehicle collisions, vibration, sports, and falls. Given enough time the body\u2019s musculature can generate force, affect the body\u2019s movements, and change the risk of some injuries. The finite-element code LS-DYNA is often used to simulate the movements and injuries sustained by the digital human body models as a result of an accident. In this work, we evaluate the accuracy of the three muscle models in LS-DYNA (MAT_156, EHTM, and the VEXAT) when simulating a range of experiments performed on isolated muscle: force-length-velocity experiments on maximally and sub-maximally stimulated muscle, active-lengthening experiments, and vibration experiments. The force-length-velocity experiments are included because these conditions are typical of the muscle activity that precedes an accident, while the active-lengthening and vibration experiments mimic conditions that can cause injury. The three models perform similarly during the maximally and sub-maximally activated force-length-velocity experiments, but noticeably differ in response to the active-lengthening and vibration experiments. The VEXAT model is able to generate the enhanced forces of biological muscle during active lengthening, while both the MAT_156 and EHTM produce too little force. In response to vibration, the stiffness and damping of the VEXAT model closely follows the experimental data while the MAT_156 and EHTM models differ substantially. The accuracy of the VEXAT model comes from two additional mechanical structures that are missing in the MAT_156 and EHTM models: viscoelastic cross-bridges, and an active titin filament. To help others build on our work we have made our simulation code publicly available.",

One of the advantages compared to other feed drive systems is consistent stiffness regardless of travel length. A primary challenge with rack-and-pinion drives is the achievable accu-racy due to backlash. To compensate for backlash, electrically preloaded systems are commonly used in machine tools. In the case of electrical preload between two motors, the system is more complex to identify because the feed drive specific properties cannot be directly assigned to the respective drive train. To address this issue, this paper presents a novel method for modeling and identifying the load-dependent stiffness and damping of an electrically preloaded system. For this purpose, a mathematical modeling based on experimental data from a test bench with industrial components is presented to separate the drive train specific properties. This allows the system behavior to be modeled more accurately and used for control approaches.",

"pages": "2544--2553","abstract": "Kuwait International Airport is currently being extended by a new iconic terminal building (Terminal 2) designed by Foster + Partners. The new terminal is to be completed by 2022. It is a single buildingdefined by a continuous roof with a length of 1.2 km and a gross total area of 320 000 m2. The roof is composed of different large-span non-repetitive freeform shells realized through an innovative prefabricated system made of steel and exposed reinforced concrete elements. These shells are at the same time the characterizing elements of the terminal\u2019s architecture and its principal structure. The sheer size of the building in combination with its structural complexity and the use of innovative prefabricated systems are the reason why this building can be considered one of most challenging constructions of our time. Taking over from design engineers at Arup, as of August 2016 Werner Sobek Stuttgart (WSS) was responsible for the engineering of the primary structures and the facades. This work included design development, optimization, detailing, and support to fabrication and construction. In order to fulfill these tasks, the authors and their collaborators at Werner Sobek developed different analyses, methods, work-flows and even project specific tools allowing for a full coordination between structural design and production. After a preliminary introduction on the project\u2019s design philosophy, this paper focuses on the specific solutions used for the design, development, and fabrication of one of the key elements of the building: the shell structure.",

This is possible due to the consideration of Gaussian beams instead of point sources which allow for the accurate description of not only the laser&\\#x2019;s far-field but also its near-field. The proposed model enables the calculation of the grating period, the inclination and the slant of the grating lines on arbitrarily shaped substrates, originating from the interference of arbitrarily orientated and positioned Gaussian beams.",
