Biocomposites contribute significantly to raising the awareness of materials derived from biomass. This paper explores the design development and application of novel natural fibre pultruded biocomposite profiles in a deployable system. Development methods include geometrical studies to create a system that transforms from flat to three-dimensional. Physical and digital models were used to refine the geometry, while connection elements were designed to suit material properties and deployability requirements. The first case study, at a furniture scale, demonstrates the use of the profiles connected using threading methods to create a lightweight multifunctional deployable system enabling easy transport and storage. This system can be locked at various heights for different purposes. The realised structure weighs 4 kg, supporting weights up to 150 kg. The second case study applies the system architecturally in an adaptive kinetic facade, adjusting to the sun\u2019s position for optimal shading, providing up to 70% daylight when open and as little as 20% when closed. These two structures validate the developed deployable system, showcasing the versatility of biocomposite profiles in such configurations. This approach enhances sustainability in architecture by enabling lightweight, adaptable, and eco-friendly building solutions.",

In this paper, a novel workflow to process and analyze the data sets in a unified reference frame is proposed. From this, differently sophisticated iteration loops can be derived. The developed methods are presented within a case study using coreless filament winding as an exemplary fabrication process within an architectural context. This additive manufacturing process, using fiber-reinforced plastics, exhibits great potential for efficient structures when its intrinsic parameter variations can be minimized. The presented method aims to make data sets comparable by identifying the steps each data set needs to undergo (acquisition, pre-processing, mapping, post-processing, analysis, and evaluation). These processes are imperative to provide the means to find domain interrelations, which in the future can provide quantitative results that will help to inform the design process, making it more reliable, and allowing for the reduction of safety factors. The geometric complexity of plate shells in conjunction with the particularities of the building material wood pose great challenges to the computational design and planning processes as structural requirements and fabrication constraints determine the shell design at early design phases. This paper discusses the design development and construction of the BUGA Wood Pavilion: A segmented timber shell structure made of hollow cassette components. Particular\r\nemphasis lies on the technical challenges of the employed building system, notably structural design and analysis, detailing solutions and the construction process. The authors further describe the integrative structural design and optimization methods developed for the timber shell in question. The BUGA Wood Pavilion demonstrates\r\nthe possibilities of lightweight and sustainable wood architecture merging the merits of integrative design, structural engineering and high-tech robotic fabrication methods.",

         "pages": "111031","abstract": "Multiphase flow in fractured porous media can be described\r\nby discrete fracture matrix models that represent the fractures as\r\ndimensionally reduced manifolds embedded in the bulk porous medium.\r\nGeneralizing earlier work on this approach we focus on immiscible\r\ntwo-phase flow in time-dependent fracture geometries, i.e., the fracture\r\nitself and the aperture of the fractures might evolve in time. For\r\ndynamic fracture geometries of that kind, neglecting capillary forces,\r\nwe deduce by transversal averaging of a full dimensional description a\r\ndimensionally reduced model that governs the geometric evolution and the\r\nflow dynamics. The core computational contribution is a\r\nmixed-dimensional finite-volume discretization based on a conforming\r\nmoving-mesh ansatz. This finite-volume moving-mesh (FVMM) algorithm is\r\ntracking the fractures' motions as a family of unions of facets of the\r\nmesh. Notably, the method permits arbitrary movement of facets of the\r\ntriangulation while keeping the mass conservation constraint. In a\r\nseries of numerical examples we investigate the modeling error of the\r\nreduced model as it compares to the original full dimensional model.\r\nMoreover, we show the performance of the finite-volume moving-mesh\r\nalgorithm for the complex wave pattern that is induced by the\r\ninteraction of saturation fronts and evolving fractures.",

This method features a multi-level agent simulation, that relies on a feedback loop between agent systems and structural simulations that update the agent environment. Such an approach can usefully be applied for the design of variable density timber slab systems, where material arrangements based on structural, fabrication, and architectural boundary conditions are necessary. Such arrangements can lead to multi-directional spanning slabs that can accept pointwise supports in unique layouts. We discuss the implementation of such a method on the basis of the structural design of a pavilion-scale multi-storey testing setup. The presented method enables a more versatile approach to the design of multi-storey timber buildings, which should increase their applicability to a diverse range of building typologies.",
