Combining two high-performance materials—ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC)
as the matrix and carbon-fibre-reinforced composites (CFRP) as the reinforcement—opens up new
possibilities for achieving very lightweight thin-walled concrete elements. This strategy, however,
leads to a higher degree of material utilisation, resulting in the generation of higher forces around load
introduction points and supports. The authors present a solution for increasing the performance of
supports of very slender CFRP-reinforced UHPC beams by using metal implants. Implants are used in
place of concrete in regions of stress concentrations and significant deviation forces. These are able to
transfer high stresses and forces e ciently due to their ability to sustain both tension and compression
in equal measure. A key issue in their development is the interface between the reinforced concrete
and metal implant. Building on previous research, this paper deals with the conceptual design of three
types of implants manufactured from di erent metals and with three di erent types of automated
production technologies (water-jet cutting, metal casting with a 3D-printed plastic formwork and
binder jetting of steel components). For this paper, tests were carried out to determine the load-bearing
behaviour of beams with the three di erent types of support implants used for load introduction at
the supports. A carbon rod served as bending reinforcement and a pre-formed textile reinforcement
cage served as shear and constructive reinforcement.
203--210
Mobile or deployable structures, wide span bridges or high-rise towers increase the demand for more efficient and lightweight structures. Recent developments in information technology, material science, electronics and structural engineering pushed the limits of feasibility further and the integration of all these technologies promise a great potential: the introduction of adaptive systems in architecture and structural engineering. In natural systems adaptive processes are well known and they seem to be obvious and appropriate. In contrast, technical systems, e. g. bridges or houses are static – they don’t react to changes in their environment. But it seems to be logical to have systems that react to external stimuli, such as varying loading conditions or noise. Adaptronics deals with all aspects which are relevant to research, development and application of adaptive systems: Sensors, actuators and a control unit are integrated into one system. Sensors (or nerves) are able to detect and measure a variety of parameters, such as temperature or strains. Actuators are used to carry out the desired control action, for instance applying a force to the system or to change the stiffness or damping of the structure. In our studies we consider active and semi-active systems with the aim to homogenise the stress distribution and to control the deflections. Numerical examples are presented in this paper to show the potential of this new development for lightweight structures.",

This strategy, however, results in a higher degree of material utilisation, which impedes load transfer from such thin-walled concrete elements to auxiliary constructions such as superordinate load-bearing systems. The authors present a solution for the load transfer from very slender CFRP-reinforced UHPC beams to its supports via steel implants [1] – [3]. In this paper, the conceptual design of three different types of implants is presented. The geometry of the implant and especially the connection of the CFRP reinforcement to the steel implant are examined in detail. For this paper the authors tested beams with three different types of implants and three different configurations of the textile CFRP reinforcement serving as structural and shear reinforcement.
1-2
We can all feel exhausted after a day of work, even if we have spent it sitting at a desk. The intuitive concept of mental effort pervades virtually all domains of human information processing and has become an indispensable ingredient for general theories of cognition (Anderson, 2007; Shenhav et al., 2017; Lieder & Griffiths, 2015). However, inconsistent use of the term across cognitive sciences, including cognitive psychology, education, human-factors engineering and artificial intelligence, makes it one of the least well-defined theoretical constructs across fields. A number of recent approaches lay the foundation for a consensus by offering formal accounts of mental effort. Yet, reaching a multifield-wide consensus on the operationalization of mental effort will require cross-talk between different empirical and computational approaches, including symbolic architectures, non-parametric Bayesian statistics and neural networks. The purpose of this full-day workshop is to review and integrate these emerging perspectives.",
