However, such stabilization methods presuppose detailed knowledge of the structure and size of basins of attraction. In this Brief Report, we numerically investigate basin size evolution when parameters are varied between dissipative and conservative limits. Basin volumes shrink fast as the conservative limit is approached, being well approximated by Gaussian profiles, independently of the period. Basin shrinkage and vanishing is due to the absence of bounded motions in the Hamiltonian limit. In addition, we find basin volume to remain essentially constant along a peculiar parameter path along which it is possible to recover the dissipation rate solely from metric properties of self-similar structures in phase-space.",

The experiments presented here, which are reminiscent of Galileo's works with rolling objects on inclines, have brought in the last years important insights into the friction between surfaces in relative motion and are of relevance for earthquakes, differing from classical block-spring models by the mechanism of energy input in the system. Robust nontrivial temporal scaling laws appearing in the dynamics of this system are reported, and it is shown that the time-support where dissipation occurs approaches a statistical fractal set with a fixed value of dimension. The distribution of periods of inactivity in the intermittent motion of the cylinder is also studied and found to be closely related to the lacunarity of a random version of the classic triadic Cantor set on the line.",

In this work a model for the dynamics of opinion formation is introduced. The model is based on a nonlinear interaction between opinion vectors of agents plus a stochastic variable to account for the effect of noise in the way the agents communicate. The dynamics presented is able to generate rich dynamical patterns of interacting groups or clusters of agents with the same opinion without a leader or centralized control. Our results show that by increasing the intensity of noise, the system goes from consensus to a disordered state. Depending on the number of competing opinions and the details of the network of interactions, the system displays a first- or a second-order transition. We compare the behavior of different topologies of interactions: one-dimensional chains, and annealed and complex networks.",

The classical Drude oscillator model was implemented to describe the static excess polarizability of the ions. The electrostatic layer correction with image charges (ELCIC) method was used to include the effects of the dielectric discontinuity between the aqueous solution and the bounding interfaces for the calculation of the electrostatic interactions. Cases with one or two charged bounding interfaces were investigated. The counterion density profile in the vicinity of the interfaces with different surface charge values was found to depend on the ionic polarizability. Ionic polarization effects are found to be relevant for ions with high excess polarizability near surfaces with high surface charge.",
