"volume": "111","number": "43","pages": "15316-15321","abstract": "Reputation is an important social construct in science, which enables informed quality assessments of both publications and careers of scientists in the absence of complete systemic information. However, the relation between reputation and career growth of an individual remains poorly understood, despite recent proliferation of quantitative research evaluation methods. Here, we develop an original framework for measuring how a publication\u2019s citation rate Δc depends on the reputation of its central author i, in addition to its net citation count c. To estimate the strength of the reputation effect, we perform a longitudinal analysis on the careers of 450 highly cited scientists, using the total citations Ci of each scientist as his/her reputation measure. We find a citation crossover c×, which distinguishes the strength of the reputation effect. For publications with c < c×, the author\u2019s reputation is found to dominate the annual citation rate. Hence, a new publication may gain a significant early advantage corresponding to roughly a 66\\% increase in the citation rate for each tenfold increase in Ci. However, the reputation effect becomes negligible for highly cited publications meaning that, for c ≥\u2009c×, the citation rate measures scientific impact more transparently. In addition, we have developed a stochastic reputation model, which is found to reproduce numerous statistical observations for real careers, thus providing insight into the microscopic mechanisms underlying cumulative advantage in science.",

"volume": "15","number": "4","pages": "1-18","abstract": "Efforts to make research results open and reproducible are increasingly reflected by journal policies encouraging or mandating authors to provide data availability statements. As a consequence of this, there has been a strong uptake of data availability statements in recent literature. Nevertheless, it is still unclear what proportion of these statements actually contain well-formed links to data, for example via a URL or permanent identifier, and if there is an added value in providing such links. We consider 531, 889 journal articles published by PLOS and BMC, develop an automatic system for labelling their data availability statements according to four categories based on their content and the type of data availability they display, and finally analyze the citation advantage of different statement categories via regression. We find that, following mandated publisher policies, data availability statements become very common. In 2018 93.7% of 21,793 PLOS articles and 88.2% of 31,956 BMC articles had data availability statements. Data availability statements containing a link to data in a repository\u2014rather than being available on request or included as supporting information files\u2014are a fraction of the total. In 2017 and 2018, 20.8% of PLOS publications and 12.2% of BMC publications provided DAS containing a link to data in a repository. We also find an association between articles that include statements that link to data in a repository and up to 25.36% (± 1.07%) higher citation impact on average, using a citation prediction model. We discuss the potential implications of these results for authors (researchers) and journal publishers who make the effort of sharing their data in repositories. All our data and code are made available in order to reproduce and extend our results.",

"note": "cite arxiv:1610.03159","abstract": "The Astropy Project (http://astropy.org) is, in its own words, \"a community\r\neffort to develop a single core package for Astronomy in Python and foster\r\ninteroperability between Python astronomy packages.\" For five years this\r\nproject has been managed, written, and operated as a grassroots,\r\nself-organized, almost entirely volunteer effort while the software is used by\r\nthe majority of the astronomical community. Despite this, the project has\r\nalways been and remains to this day effectively unfunded. Further, contributors\r\nreceive little or no formal recognition for creating and supporting what is now\r\ncritical software. This paper explores the problem in detail, outlines possible\r\nsolutions to correct this, and presents a few suggestions on how to address the\r\nsustainability of general purpose astronomical software.",
