with ultrashort pulses has been extensively studied, yet understanding irregularities and defects such as irregular hole shapes, bending, and the formation of side channels remains challenging due to limitations in conventional diagnostics. A study was conducted at the DESY (Deutsches Elektronen‐Synchrotron, Hamburg, Germany), in which high-speed synchrotron X ray imaging was used to observe the dynamic shape changes during laser drilling of metals, bridging the gaps left by previous diagnostic techniques. The experimental setup involved an ultrafast YB:YAG laser focused on a sample made from stainless-steel. The X-ray beam enabled the capturing of the formation of a microhole during the drilling process, providing valuable insights into the microhole formation and associated defects. The X-ray image sequences were post-processed using a flat field correction and a Kalman filter to enhance the image quality. In this talk, we delve into the formation of side channels and bulges during the drilling process. In addition, we show the effects of the polarization states of the processing laser on the formation of side channels.","annote":"","author":[{"family":"Henn","given":"Manuel"},{"family":"Schneller","given":"Lukas"},{"family":"Buser","given":"Matthias"},{"family":"Hagenlocher","given":"Christian"},{"family":"Spurk","given":"Christoph"},{"family":"Hummel","given":"Marc"},{"family":"Beckmann","given":"Felix"},{"family":"Moosmann","given":"Julian"},{"family":"Graf","given":"Thomas"}],"citation-label":"Henn.2024.xray.drilling","collection-editor":[],"collection-title":"","container-author":[],"container-title":"","documents":[],"edition":"","editor":[],"event-date":{"date-parts":[["2024"]],"literal":"2024"},"event-place":"","id":"458ade3457d8f95c50d01b418e257285ifsw","interhash":"9f7482af79f091f70cabbe7164c03207","intrahash":"458ade3457d8f95c50d01b418e257285","issue":"","issued":{"date-parts":[["2024"]],"literal":"2024"},"keyword":"myown ablation x-ray ultrashort nondestructive drilling diagnostics micromaterialprocessing pulse stainlesssteel processmonitoring","misc":{"venue":"SLT 2024","eventdate":"04 - 06 June 2024"},"note":"","number":"","page":"","page-first":"","publisher":"","publisher-place":"","status":"","title":"High Speed X-Ray Imaging of Laser Percussion Drilling with Ultrashort Laser Pulses","type":"speech","username":"ifsw","version":"","volume":""},"ee2accbe285011c47056abe327fb4540ifsw":{"DOI":"10.1016/j.procir.2024.08.194","ISBN":"","ISSN":"2212-8271","URL":"http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.procir.2024.08.194","abstract":"The formation of slits with very high aspect ratios is critical for the production of additively manufactured parts for advanced electric drives. The quality of a microhole can be affected by heat accumulation, the development of side channels, and microhole bulging due to plasma formation. Highspeed synchrotron X-ray imaging was applied to capture the space- and time-resolved evolution of the microhole shape during laser percussion drilling of stainless steel. The recorded images show that heat accumulation leads to the formation of a melt film on microhole walls, which dynamically fluctuates during drilling. Additionally, the formation of side channels was observed in the region of the maximum drilling depth where the overall fluence on the microhole walls drops below the threshold fluence. The experimentally captured quantities agree well with existing models and will significantly improve their prediction accuracy.","annote":"","author":[{"family":"Henn","given":"Manuel"},{"family":"Hagenlocher","given":"Christian"},{"family":"Holder","given":"Daniel"},{"family":"Förster","given":"Daniel J."},{"family":"Weber","given":"Rudolf"},{"family":"Haasler","given":"Dennis"},{"family":"Hummel","given":"Marc"},{"family":"Olowinsky","given":"Alexander"},{"family":"Beckmann","given":"Felix"},{"family":"Moosmann","given":"Julian"},{"family":"Graf","given":"Thomas"}],"citation-label":"henn2023progress","collection-editor":[],"collection-title":"","container-author":[],"container-title":"","documents":[],"edition":"","editor":[],"event-date":{"date-parts":[["2023"]],"literal":"2023"},"event-place":"","id":"ae9a74f48c02278e8d16fc5a0fd60cf0ifsw","interhash":"56ffbc2b9fc009e155ec5ca0aec781e5","intrahash":"ae9a74f48c02278e8d16fc5a0fd60cf0","issue":"","issued":{"date-parts":[["2023"]],"literal":"2023"},"keyword":"myown ablation diagnostics x-ray micromaterialprocessing nondestructive ultrashortpulse stainlesssteel drilling processmonitoring","misc":{"eventtitle":"Lasers in Manufacturing Conference","venue":"Munich, Germany"},"note":"","number":"","page":"","page-first":"","publisher":"","publisher-place":"","status":"","title":"The progress of microhole formation during laser percussion drilling of steel observed by highspeed synchrotron x-ray imaging","type":"speech","username":"ifsw","version":"","volume":""},"08fa8354a72c899275b2bf667cd24bfeifsw":{"DOI":"","ISBN":"","ISSN":"","URL":"https://www.spiedigitallibrary.org/profile/notfound?author=Manuel_Henn#_=_","abstract":"Laser-based powder bed fusion of metals faces limitations in accuracy, surface quality, and minimal structure size resulting from the inherent melting process. To address these challenges, a novel approach integrating additive and subtractive laser processes at the layer level has been developed. This quasi-simultaneous manufacturing process enables the fabrication of small structures with high aspect ratios, including narrow slits below 50 μm in width. The implications of this advancement are promising, particularly in the fields of electric drives and fuel cells, where accuracy and freedom of design are crucial. In this work, the latest results of the production of narrow, inclined slits in components made of pure iron will be shown. The experimentally captured quantities agree well with existing models and will significantly improve their prediction accuracy.","annote":"","author":[{"family":"Henn","given":"Manuel"},{"family":"Hagenlocher","given":"Christian"},{"family":"Holder","given":"Daniel"},{"family":"Förster","given":"Daniel J."},{"family":"Weber","given":"Rudolf"},{"family":"Haasler","given":"Dennis"},{"family":"Hummel","given":"Marc"},{"family":"Olowinsky","given":"Alexander"},{"family":"Beckmann","given":"Felix"},{"family":"Moosmann","given":"Julian"},{"family":"Graf","given":"Thomas"}],"citation-label":"henn2023progress","collection-editor":[],"collection-title":"Proc.
