However, the interplay of these aspects at the cognitive and neural level is still not fully understood.\r\nMethod\r\n\r\nWe developed four computational models in the cognitive architecture ACT-R to clarify underlying memory-related strategies and mechanisms. Our models account for human data of an experiment that required participants to perform a symbol sequence learning task with embedded interruptions. We explored the inclusion of subsymbolic mechanisms to explain these data and used our final model to generate fMRI predictions.\r\nResults\r\n\r\nThe final model indicates a reasonable fit for reaction times and accuracy and links the fMRI predictions to the Cognitive Load Theory.\r\nConclusions\r\n\r\nOur work emphasizes the influence of task characteristics and supports a process-related view on cognitive load in instructional scenarios. It further contributes to the discussion of underlying mechanisms at a neural level.","annote":"","author":[{"family":"Wirzberger","given":"Maria"},{"family":"Borst","given":"Jelmer P"},{"family":"Krems","given":"Josef F"},{"family":"Rey","given":"Günter Daniel"}],"citation-label":"wirzberger2020memory","collection-editor":[],"collection-title":"","container-author":[],"container-title":"Trends in Neuroscience and Education","documents":[],"edition":"","editor":[],"event-date":{"date-parts":[["2020"]],"literal":"2020"},"event-place":"","id":"6967bd47c956f6850bf08f6450e36dbdllis","interhash":"98e735899df4a406d1a1a7e03566c8ab","intrahash":"6967bd47c956f6850bf08f6450e36dbd","issue":"","issued":{"date-parts":[["2020"]],"literal":"2020"},"keyword":"ACT-R cognition learning llis load modeling myown","misc":{"doi":"10.1016/j.tine.2020.100139"},"note":"","number":"","page":"100139","page-first":"100139","publisher":"Elsevier","publisher-place":"","status":"","title":"Memory-related cognitive load effects in an interrupted learning task: A model-based explanation","type":"article-journal","username":"llis","version":"","volume":""},"08c4bedde4f52a58697a26dd71395262mariawirzberger":{"DOI":"","ISBN":"","ISSN":"","URL":"","abstract":"","annote":"","author":[{"family":"Wirzberger","given":"Maria"},{"family":"Rey","given":"G/unther Daniel"}],"citation-label":"Wirzberger2016CLT","collection-editor":[{"family":"Funke","given":"Joachim"},{"family":"Rummel","given":"Jan"},{"family":"Voß","given":"Andreas"}],"collection-title":"","container-author":[{"family":"Funke","given":"Joachim"},{"family":"Rummel","given":"Jan"},{"family":"Voß","given":"Andreas"}],"container-title":"Abstracts of the 58th Conference of Experimental Psychologists","documents":[],"edition":"","editor":[{"family":"Funke","given":"Joachim"},{"family":"Rummel","given":"Jan"},{"family":"Voß","given":"Andreas"}],"event-date":{"date-parts":[["2016"]],"literal":"2016"},"event-place":"Lengerich","id":"08c4bedde4f52a58697a26dd71395262mariawirzberger","interhash":"234e3eb9482a0c3a27eb56886fc7f1cc","intrahash":"08c4bedde4f52a58697a26dd71395262","issue":"","issued":{"date-parts":[["2016"]],"literal":"2016"},"keyword":"ACT-R cognition instruction learning load modeling myown","note":"","number":"","page":"377","page-first":"377","publisher":"Pabst Science Publishers","publisher-place":"Lengerich","status":"","title":"CLT meets ACT-R: Modeling load-inducing factors in instructional design","type":"paper-conference","username":"mariawirzberger","version":"","volume":""},"1dc28d5c6844888db59bb7730214a73amariawirzberger":{"DOI":"10.14279/depositonce-4887","ISBN":"","ISSN":"","URL":"","abstract":"","annote":"","author":[{"family":"Wirzberger","given":"Maria"},{"family":"Rey","given":"Günter Daniel"}],"citation-label":"Wirzberger2015CLT","collection-editor":[{"family":"Wienrich","given":"Carolin"},{"family":"Zander","given":"Thorsten O."},{"family":"Gramann","given":"Klaus"}],"collection-title":"","container-author":[{"family":"Wienrich","given":"Carolin"},{"family":"Zander","given":"Thorsten O."},{"family":"Gramann","given":"Klaus"}],"container-title":"Trends in Neuroergonomics.
