We argue that AR opens up new opportunities to interact with, understand and share personal health data. To this end, we developed an app prototype that uses a Snapchat-like face filter to visualize personal health data from a fitness tracker in AR. We tested this prototype in two pilot studies and found that AR does have potential in this type of application. We suggest that AR cannot replace the current interfaces of smartwatches and mobile apps, but it can pick up where current technology falls short in creating intrinsic motivation and personal health awareness. We also provide ideas for future work in this direction.","annote":"","author":[{"family":"Rigling","given":"Sebastian"},{"family":"Yu","given":"Xingyao"},{"family":"Sedlmair","given":"Michael"}],"citation-label":"Rigling2023","collection-editor":[],"collection-title":"CHI EA '23","container-author":[],"container-title":"Extended Abstracts of the 2023 CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems","documents":[],"edition":"","editor":[],"event-date":{"date-parts":[["2023","04","19"]],"literal":"2023"},"event-place":"Hamburg, Germany","id":"aa3b2fa4a76d2adbdb12601a8e1f303dxingyaoyu","interhash":"24da0c7c6333c7c0e7cb91add0f381fc","intrahash":"aa3b2fa4a76d2adbdb12601a8e1f303d","issue":"","issued":{"date-parts":[["2023","04","19"]],"literal":"2023"},"keyword":"myown visus:riglinsn intcdc simtech IntCDC visus:sedlmaml visus:yuxo visus exc2075 exc2075(from2019)","misc":{"isbn":"9781450394222","location":"Hamburg, Germany","doi":"10.1145/3544549.3585912"},"note":"","number":"","number-of-pages":"6","page":"1–7","page-first":"1","publisher":"Association for Computing Machinery","publisher-place":"Hamburg, Germany","status":"","title":"\"In Your Face!\": Visualizing Fitness Tracker Data in Augmented Reality","type":"paper-conference","username":"xingyaoyu","version":"","volume":""},"c898cef85a73148a11d8282302c4d9a8m.herschel":{"DOI":"10.48786/edbt.2023.07","ISBN":"","ISSN":"","URL":"https://doi.org/10.48786/edbt.2023.07","abstract":"","annote":"","author":[{"family":"Gazzarri","given":"Leonardo"},{"family":"Herschel","given":"Melanie"}],"citation-label":"DBLP:conf/edbt/GazzarriH23","collection-editor":[],"collection-title":"","container-author":[],"container-title":"International Conference on Extending Database Technology (EDBT)","documents":[],"edition":"","editor":[],"event-date":{"date-parts":[["2023"]],"literal":"2023"},"event-place":"","id":"c898cef85a73148a11d8282302c4d9a8m.herschel","interhash":"c9dff3c29fe8c95c9aab8edff5386717","intrahash":"c898cef85a73148a11d8282302c4d9a8","issue":"","issued":{"date-parts":[["2023"]],"literal":"2023"},"keyword":"intcdc entity-resolution peer rp9-2 ipvs-de","misc":{"bibsource":"dblp computer science bibliography, https://dblp.org","doi":"10.48786/edbt.2023.07"},"note":"","number":"","number-of-pages":"11","page":"80--91","page-first":"80","publisher":"","publisher-place":"","status":"","title":"Progressive Entity Resolution over Incremental Data","type":"paper-conference","username":"m.herschel","version":"","volume":""},"ee93b2f3663821e31d0dc324307f1c88m.herschel":{"DOI":"10.1007/978-3-031-07481-3\\_6","ISBN":"","ISSN":"","URL":"https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-031-07481-3\\_6","abstract":"","annote":"","author":[{"family":"Lässig","given":"Nico"},{"family":"Herschel","given":"Melanie"},{"family":"Reichle","given":"Alexander"},{"family":"Ellwein","given":"Carsten"},{"family":"Verl","given":"Alexander"}],"citation-label":"DBLP:conf/caise/LassigHREV22","collection-editor":[],"collection-title":"","container-author":[],"container-title":"Intelligent Information Systems - Forum, International Conference on Advanced Information Systems Engineering (CAiSE)","documents":[],"edition":"","editor":[],"event-date":{"date-parts":[["2022"]],"literal":"2022"},"event-place":"","id":"ee93b2f3663821e31d0dc324307f1c88m.herschel","interhash":"6a2b0b768cd70b6aa2715d6631fbb483","intrahash":"ee93b2f3663821e31d0dc324307f1c88","issue":"","issued":{"date-parts":[["2022"]],"literal":"2022"},"keyword":"intcdc peer ipvs-de rp9","misc":{"bibsource":"dblp computer science bibliography, https://dblp.org","doi":"10.1007/978-3-031-07481-3\\_6"},"note":"","number":"","number-of-pages":"9","page":"45--54","page-first":"45","publisher":"","publisher-place":"","status":"","title":"The ArchIBALD Data Integration Platform: Bridging Fragmented Processes in the Building Industry","type":"paper-conference","username":"m.herschel","version":"","volume":""},"3ee24270cbfeeeda24d47639eb429e10frankheyen":{"DOI":"10.1007/s12650-022-00859-2","ISBN":"","ISSN":"","URL":"https://doi.org/10.1007/s12650-022-00859-2","abstract":"Immersive analytics often takes place in virtual environments which promise the users immersion. To fulfill this promise, sensory feedback, such as haptics, is an important component, which is however not well supported yet. Existing haptic devices are often expensive, stationary, or occupy the user’s hand, preventing them from grasping objects or using a controller. We propose PropellerHand, an ungrounded hand-mounted haptic device with two rotatable propellers, that allows exerting forces on the hand without obstructing hand use. PropellerHand is able to simulate feedback such as weight and torque by generating thrust up to 11 N in 2-DOF and a torque of 1.87 Nm in 2-DOF. Its design builds on our experience from quantitative and qualitative experiments with different form factors and parts. We evaluated our prototype through a qualitative user study in various VR scenarios that required participants to manipulate virtual objects in different ways, while changing between torques and directional forces. Results show that PropellerHand improves users’ immersion in virtual reality. Additionally, we conducted a second user study in the field of immersive visualization to investigate the potential benefits of PropellerHand there.","annote":"","author":[{"family":"Achberger","given":"Alexander"},{"family":"Heyen","given":"Frank"},{"family":"Vidackovic","given":"Kresimir"},{"family":"Sedlmair","given":"Michael"}],"citation-label":"achberger2022touching","collection-editor":[],"collection-title":"","container-author":[],"container-title":"Journal of Visualization","documents":[],"edition":"","editor":[],"event-date":{"date-parts":[["2022"]],"literal":"2022"},"event-place":"","id":"3ee24270cbfeeeda24d47639eb429e10frankheyen","interhash":"e69f77a4eb5dfbd499f83cc13f62f6b8","intrahash":"3ee24270cbfeeeda24d47639eb429e10","issue":"","issued":{"date-parts":[["2022"]],"literal":"2022"},"keyword":"myown intcdc rp4 visus:heyenfk visus:achberar visus:sedlmaml peerreviewed from:frankheyen visus","misc":{"doi":"10.1007/s12650-022-00859-2"},"note":"","number":"","page":"","page-first":"","publisher":"","publisher-place":"","status":"","title":"Touching data with PropellerHand","type":"article-journal","username":"frankheyen","version":"","volume":""},"0648a2fd1e983ebc8b0bf50654c4ebe1m.herschel":{"DOI":"10.1007/s13222-021-00401-y","ISBN":"","ISSN":"","URL":"https://doi.org/10.1007/s13222-021-00401-y","abstract":"","annote":"","author":[{"family":"Lässig","given":"Nico"},{"family":"Oppold","given":"Sarah"},{"family":"Herschel","given":"Melanie"}],"citation-label":"lassig2022metrics","collection-editor":[],"collection-title":"","container-author":[],"container-title":"Datenbank-Spektrum","documents":[],"edition":"","editor":[],"event-date":{"date-parts":[["2022"]],"literal":"2022"},"event-place":"","id":"0648a2fd1e983ebc8b0bf50654c4ebe1m.herschel","interhash":"d12428f2f0b0a4164726c0355450bdba","intrahash":"0648a2fd1e983ebc8b0bf50654c4ebe1","issue":"1","issued":{"date-parts":[["2022"]],"literal":"2022"},"keyword":"intcdc peer ipvs-de rp9 accountability","misc":{"refid":"Lässig2022","doi":"10.1007/s13222-021-00401-y"},"note":"","number":"1","number-of-pages":"20","page":"23 - 43","page-first":"23","publisher":"","publisher-place":"","status":"","title":"Metrics and Algorithms for Locally Fair and Accurate Classifications using Ensembles","type":"article-journal","username":"m.herschel","version":"","volume":"22"},"8bb7bb59cc009f09d68953841815d178m.herschel":{"DOI":"https://doi.org/10.18420/btw2021-08","ISBN":"","ISSN":"","URL":"https://dl.gi.de/handle/20.500.12116/35813","abstract":"","annote":"","author":[{"family":"Lässig","given":"Nico"},{"family":"Oppold","given":"Sarah"},{"family":"Herschel","given":"Melanie"}],"citation-label":"lssig2021using","collection-editor":[],"collection-title":"","container-author":[],"container-title":"In Proceedings of Database Systems for Business, Technology, and Web (BTW)","documents":[],"edition":"","editor":[],"event-date":{"date-parts":[["2021"]],"literal":"2021"},"event-place":"","id":"8bb7bb59cc009f09d68953841815d178m.herschel","interhash":"0f5e9def4843ff92d2cb104af898c8c9","intrahash":"8bb7bb59cc009f09d68953841815d178","issue":"","issued":{"date-parts":[["2021"]],"literal":"2021"},"keyword":"intcdc peer ipvs-de rp9 accountability","misc":{"doi":"https://doi.org/10.18420/btw2021-08"},"note":"","number":"","page":"","page-first":"","publisher":"","publisher-place":"","status":"","title":"Using FALCES against bias in automated decisions by integrating fairness in dynamic model ensembles","type":"paper-conference","username":"m.herschel","version":"","volume":""}}
