These latter remain underutilized, unsuitable for integrated querying and knowledge discovering. Hence the importance of this survey on data integration which identifies challenging issues and trends. First, an overview of the different generations and basics of data integration is given. Then, semantic data integration is focused, since it semantically links data allowing wider insights and decision-making. More than thirty works are reviewed. The goal is to help analysts to identify relevant criteria to compare then choose among semantic data integration approaches, focusing on the category (materialized, virtual or hybrid) and querying techniques.","annote":"","author":[{"family":"Masmoudi","given":"Maroua"},{"family":"Ben Abdallah Ben Lamine","given":"Sana"},{"family":"Karray","given":"Mohamed Hedi"},{"family":"Archimede","given":"Bernard"},{"family":"Baazaoui Zghal","given":"Hajer"}],"citation-label":"Masmoudi2024","collection-editor":[],"collection-title":"","container-author":[],"container-title":"ACM Comput. Invariant (consistent) and variant (context-specific) knowledge are difficult to align cross-domain. Generic top-level semantic terminology often is too abstract, while MSE domain terminology often is too specific. In this paper, an approach how to maintain a comprehensive MSE-centric terminology composing a mid-level ontology–the Platform MaterialDigital Core Ontology (PMDco)–via MSE community-based curation procedures is presented. The illustrated findings show how the PMDco bridges semantic gaps between high-level, MSE-specific, and other science domain semantics. Additionally, it demonstrates how the PMDco lowers development and integration thresholds. Moreover, the research highlights how to fuel it with real-world data sources ranging from manually conducted experiments and simulations with continuously automated industrial applications.","annote":"","author":[{"family":"Bayerlein","given":"Bernd"},{"family":"Schilling","given":"Markus"},{"family":"Birkholz","given":"Henk"},{"family":"Jung","given":"Matthias"},{"family":"Waitelonis","given":"Jörg"},{"family":"Mädler","given":"Lutz"},{"family":"Sack","given":"Harald"}],"citation-label":"BAYERLEIN2024112603","collection-editor":[],"collection-title":"","container-author":[],"container-title":"Materials & Design","documents":[],"edition":"","editor":[],"event-date":{"date-parts":[["2024"]],"literal":"2024"},"event-place":"","id":"63ba03ca9b432034215968b576ceb22ediglezakis","interhash":"3e7a11f94577798c8cc3d462f8eb794d","intrahash":"63ba03ca9b432034215968b576ceb22e","issue":"","issued":{"date-parts":[["2024"]],"literal":"2024"},"keyword":"forschungsdaten metadata interoperability materialScience ontology","misc":{"issn":"0264-1275","doi":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.matdes.2023.112603"},"note":"","number":"","page":"112603","page-first":"112603","publisher":"","publisher-place":"","status":"","title":"PMD Core Ontology: Achieving semantic interoperability in materials science","type":"article-journal","username":"diglezakis","version":"","volume":"237"},"3222be0bde8cdbc5227f108c1bb3e436diglezakis":{"DOI":"10.1145/1667062.1667064","ISBN":"","ISSN":"","URL":"http://doi.acm.org/10.1145/1667062.1667064","abstract":"","annote":"","author":[{"family":"Haslhofer","given":"Bernhard"},{"family":"Klas","given":"Wolfgang"}],"citation-label":"haslhofer2010survey","collection-editor":[],"collection-title":"","container-author":[],"container-title":"ACM Comput.
