provided under open source licenses is widely used, from forming high-profile stand-alone applications (e.g., Mozilla Firefox) to being embedded in commercial offerings (e.g., network routers). Despite the high frequency of use of open source licenses, there has been little work about whether software developers understand the open source licenses they use. To our knowledge, only one survey has been conducted, which focused on which licenses developers choose and when they encounter problems with licensing open source software. To help fill the gap of whether or not developers understand the open source licenses they use, we conducted a survey that posed development scenarios involving three popular open source licenses (GNU GPL 3.0, GNU LGPL 3.0 and MPL 2.0) both alone and in combination. The 375 respondents to the survey, who were largely developers, gave answers consistent with those of a legal expert's opinion in 62% of 42 cases. Although developers clearly understood cases involving one license, they struggled when multiple licenses were involved. An analysis of the quantitative and qualitative results of the study indicate a need for tool support to help guide developers in understanding this critical information attached to software components.","annote":"","author":[{"family":"Almeida","given":"Daniel A."},{"family":"Murphy","given":"Gail C."},{"family":"Wilson","given":"Greg"},{"family":"Hoye","given":"Mike"}],"citation-label":"Almeida:2017:SDU:3101414.3101416","collection-editor":[],"collection-title":"ICPC '17","container-author":[],"container-title":"Proceedings of the 25th International Conference on Program Comprehension","documents":[],"edition":"","editor":[],"event-date":{"date-parts":[["2017"]],"literal":"2017"},"event-place":"Buenos Aires, Argentina","id":"16fa011aa333399a77ba5cbd625ccb1cdiglezakis","interhash":"5cbaf4d24c66dc5ace380c680ad0a637","intrahash":"16fa011aa333399a77ba5cbd625ccb1c","issue":"","issued":{"date-parts":[["2017"]],"literal":"2017"},"keyword":"software softwareLizenzMotivation opensource litQSaFE licensing","misc":{"acmid":"3101416","isbn":"978-1-5386-0535-6","numpages":"11","location":"Buenos Aires, Argentina","doi":"10.1109/ICPC.2017.7"},"note":"","number":"","number-of-pages":"10","page":"1--11","page-first":"1","publisher":"IEEE Press","publisher-place":"Buenos Aires, Argentina","status":"","title":"Do Software Developers Understand Open Source Licenses?","type":"paper-conference","username":"diglezakis","version":"","volume":""},"c7867f13d506eecdb9a1ffb220e0236fdiglezakis":{"DOI":"http://dx.doi.org/10.14288/1.0354559","ISBN":"","ISSN":"","URL":"https://open.library.ubc.ca/cIRcle/collections/24/items/1.0354559","abstract":"","annote":"","author":[{"family":"Almeida","given":"Daniel A."}],"citation-label":"Almeida_2017","collection-editor":[],"collection-title":"Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETDs) 2008+","container-author":[],"container-title":"","documents":[],"edition":"","editor":[],"event-date":{"date-parts":[["2017"]],"literal":"2017"},"event-place":"","genre":"PhD dissertation","id":"c7867f13d506eecdb9a1ffb220e0236fdiglezakis","interhash":"71a04ecfec6677f79d17c33088bdf251","intrahash":"c7867f13d506eecdb9a1ffb220e0236f","issue":"","issued":{"date-parts":[["2017"]],"literal":"2017"},"keyword":"software softwareLizenzMotivation licensing","misc":{"collection":"Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETDs) 2008+","doi":"http://dx.doi.org/10.14288/1.0354559"},"note":"","number":"","page":"","page-first":"","publisher":"University of British Columbia","publisher-place":"","status":"","title":"Investigating software developers’ understanding of open source software licensing","type":"thesis","username":"diglezakis","version":"","volume":""},"c3a9b974d06af95b9e8c8d2548391536diglezakis":{"DOI":"10.1111/j.1467-8535.1996.tb00140.x","ISBN":"","ISSN":"1467-8535","URL":"http://dx.doi.org/10.1111/j.1467-8535.1996.tb00140.x","abstract":"A survey of UK sports scientists was carried out to identify the extent and nature of uses for computers, it was found that over 40% of those surveyed use computers for teaching and research. Whilst a number of areas were shown to be amenable to computer application, exercise science was the most common. Generally the software was considered to be robust, flexible and of great value. Approximately two thirds of all software was commercial in origin. Many people were unsure about licence agreements and copyright but all expressed a keen desire for better communication between users and a greater sharing of information.","annote":"","author":[{"family":"Sharp","given":"Bob"}],"citation-label":"BJET:BJET25","collection-editor":[],"collection-title":"","container-author":[],"container-title":"British Journal of Educational Technology","documents":[],"edition":"","editor":[],"event-date":{"date-parts":[["1996"]],"literal":"1996"},"event-place":"","id":"c3a9b974d06af95b9e8c8d2548391536diglezakis","interhash":"37bbe6bd103fc94145ca5ea7d06c2e35","intrahash":"c3a9b974d06af95b9e8c8d2548391536","issue":"1","issued":{"date-parts":[["1996"]],"literal":"1996"},"keyword":"software softwareLizenzMotivation sportscience licensing research","misc":{"issn":"1467-8535","doi":"10.1111/j.1467-8535.1996.tb00140.x"},"note":"","number":"1","number-of-pages":"7","page":"25-32","page-first":"25","publisher":"Blackwell Publishing Ltd","publisher-place":"","status":"","title":"The use of computers in sports science.","type":"article-journal","username":"diglezakis","version":"","volume":"27"},"50fe5d4d352b89de462e5af1d9a08f81diglezakis":{"DOI":"10.1371/journal.pcbi.1002598","ISBN":"","ISSN":"","URL":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3406002/","abstract":"","annote":"","author":[{"family":"Morin","given":"A"},{"family":"Urban","given":"J"},{"family":"Sliz","given":"P"}],"citation-label":"Morin:2012:PLoS-Comput-Biol:22844236","collection-editor":[],"collection-title":"","container-author":[],"container-title":"PLoS Comput Biol","documents":[],"edition":"","editor":[],"event-date":{"date-parts":[["2012"]],"literal":"2012"},"event-place":"","id":"50fe5d4d352b89de462e5af1d9a08f81diglezakis","interhash":"6d7db03e6e8e4f18da3bc1cdfc564b2e","intrahash":"50fe5d4d352b89de462e5af1d9a08f81","issue":"7","issued":{"date-parts":[["2012"]],"literal":"2012"},"keyword":"software softwareLizenzMotivation licensing","misc":{"pmid":"22844236","doi":"10.1371/journal.pcbi.1002598"},"note":"","number":"7","page":"","page-first":"","publisher":"","publisher-place":"","status":"","title":"A quick guide to software licensing for the scientist-programmer","type":"article-journal","username":"diglezakis","version":"","volume":"8"}}
